Default Re: How long have you had diabetes? Which Type?

I grew up perfectly healthy, just a little chunky. I was diagnosed Type 1 in 1990 at age 20. Totally ruined my college drinking career. I had a car wreck on Jan 2 and cracked my sternum/bruised my heart. I checked out perfectly fine in August at the doctor, but I started losing weight in September. By Thanksgiving I had lost 60 pounds and went to a doc-in-a-box the day after. My sugar was over 900. Went on pills for 9 months and insulin in May of 91. I have been on a pump since 1995.

Theoretically, a major trauma to the body can set off an autoimmune repsonse that results in the islet cells being destroyed by rogue macrophages and white blood cells. Such is life.
