Hi. Atkins can be done by people suffering from a heart condition (Dr. Atkins was a cardiologist, by the way). This diet is known to lower blood sugar, reduce blood pressure, decrease triglycerides, etc., so I believe it is exactly what you are looking for. However, to gain the benefits Dr. Atkins talks about, you'll have to do Atkins correctly. So you will want to read the book,
"Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution" (2002 ed.), especially Chapter 27. Maybe you did already, maybe not... I'm just pointing it out.
Did you talk to your doctor about this? If you don't feel comfortable telling him you are doing Atkins (misconceptions, blah blah), simply say that you'll stop eating sugar and white flour, and instead concentrate on unprocessed foods like vegetables, eggs, meat, nuts, legumes, fruits, whole grains, etc.
Good luck whatever you decide to do.
