I just feel better when I exercise, and I usually go on a few bicycle tours during the summer so I have to stay in shape for those.
I highly recommend cycling to anyone who has trouble walking or running because of bad knees. I've injured my knees and had several surgeries including microfracture, but I still find walking more than a mile painful. Cycling doesn't put much stress on your joints and it's something you can do into your old age usually.
