I try to pack/bring my own food. That takes the pressure off the person I might be visiting and just makes it easier for me.
We go to visiting family occasionally and I bring a cooler with my own salad, dressing, heavy cream, cream cheese and cooked meat that I can reheat quickly, cheese, etc. Or when I got there, I would run to the store and pick up things I could eat. Initially I think my mother-in-law was a bit offended I did that but after a while, not only did she start stocking food I could eat but she started eating more low carb food herself.
It might not hurt to tell people ahead of time. I know my mom would have been more accomodating but I didn't tell her before we visited.
Good luck!
