1) Chewing gum (the sugarfree one) is made with aspartame, and aspartame is nasty. It can stall people and there are controversies regarding its health effects. This is the objective answer... Now the subjective one, I do have chewing gum sometimes, although I try to avoid it in general because I tend to eat too much. But before e.g. meeting my thesis supervisor, in case I don't have my toothbrush with me, I do have a chewing gum to get rid of the ketosis breath. Otherwise I'm afraid he might stop paying me...
2) I would not eat them. A bit of sugar usually brings more and more friends with it. From my experience, the best way to stay on track is to avoid sugar, even in trace amounts.
