I like running more, because in the end I feel like I have accomplished something (unlike when walking).
In terms of calorie burning, there's a link posted by Lyssie in the thread I linked above.
As for how long, I think the more the better. However, I suppose you are asking for a minimum time you should exercise to see any results... It really depends on things such as how much you weight, what is your fitness level, at what intensity you are exercising, etc. But everyone knows/feels when they've had a good workout, so you should figure that out when you're on the treadmill.
BTW, good job for exercising!
