Default A question for someone who has already been there

I'm actually pretty young for this problem I know, but here I am none the less. I have noticed a significant drop in my pain levels since starting Atkins this time. Counting the first time I was on the diet (I know, way of eating, not diet) earlier this year and this time I'm about 2 pounds shy of loosing 50lbs.

My question is, do any of you have arthritis in your upper spine? If so what do you do to, I guess extend you day would be one way of putting it? I had to go back to school due to my knees being destroyed from lifting and steel grating and also my spine. By the time I get to the end of the day I can think of little more than getting home and laying on the heating pad and taking the stress off of my spine. Also, has anyone noticed a significant drop in pain on your spine once you approached what your weight is supposed to be?

It's amazing how detoxing yourself from all the sugars and bad carbs can really make you feel so much better! I am sorry if this makes little sense or seems choppy, I've only had one cup of coffee this morning!

I have osteo-arthritis in my spine (upper & lower) and my hip. I noticed significant pain reduction from doing Atkins. I believe that this is because Atkins is such an anti-inflammation diet (among many other things). Anyways, I seldom have to take my piroxicam (generic Feldene).

Still, when sitting at the computer for hours my upper spine acts up. Periodic simple stretching is somewhat preventative (lessens it) but my "secret" is to keep a bottle of Absorbine, Jr. or Icy Hot handy. Both are roll-on bottles so it's easy to apply it even while still dressed and at the desk. Absorbine, Jr. doesn't have that pepperminty aroma. The Extra Strength version is the best if you can find it. There is a $1 off coupon on the Absorbine, Jr. site.

I am only about halfway to goal with another 75-80#s to lose so I don't know if I'll be even more pain free then. I hope!

Congrats on the almost 50 lbs!
I have arthritis in my hands~ from doing years of therapeutic massage. I hurt my back lifting a patient about 12 years ago and I went to a specialist who said to do a low carb diet because it lessened the brains interpretation of pain. Guess what it worked! I have healed from the original injury, but when I gained weight many of the same problems came back.

Have you tried therapy in heated pools? Or any pools? Buoyancy is a great way to allieviate stress to the spine. Core strengthening exercises in the pool or a large spa could be a huge help, then to just soak and take the weight of gravity off the spine would be wonderful!

    Good luck to you

    WOW 50 lbs!!! GREAT work!!!

I agree that Atkins is detoxifying especially if done correctly with a focus on vegetables and significant amounts of carbs. Additionally shedding those pounds seriously decreases the pressure on the spine and other areas. Your body has less weight to support and is less stressed in doing so, also if you have been exercising then your muscles are stronger too and can support the weight more efficiently. Back when i had serious back issues, my chiropractor would encourage me to lose weight to relive some of the streess on my back, alas, i didn't know about Atkins back then.

You can consider this a bonus for successful weight loss, i prefer to think of this sort of thing and the energizing effect of Atkins as even more important than the actual lbs lost since it improves your quality of life in a very broad way.

Oh my gosh!!! I just told my husband that I didn't know if Atkins had anything to do with my pain levels being less. I decided to come on here and was hoping that maybe someone was having the same wonderful side effect! I've been doing Induction and am on my 7th day and have lost 6 pounds. It's got to be the ATkins!! I have rheumatoid arthritis and I'm feeling so good. It's got to be the preservatives and high carbs causing the pain! I am so excited about feeling so good!!! Can you tell?!?!

    Very grateful to Atkins,

Wow, just got back on track and I can't believe the replies! I am now positive that the low carb eating is what was making me feel better. Lol, I'm so lousy now after eating stuff that I shouldn't have for a couple of months I can barely move. Flared up so bad I haven't even bothered to grab the scales out of the top of the closet.

Anyway, I'm glad this works for you all. H2Obaby, heated pools are not in abundance around here, if you go to nowhere and hang a left you will find my house! As it warms up I might try my brothers pool this summer.

Mizski, I do try the icyhot and theragesic, sometimes it does offer a little relief. I'm down to one class two times a week for the summer semester so it's not quite as bad. This fall I have a full load of classes so I'll be in a pickle then!

    Thanks for all the replies!

You can contact your local chapter of the Arthritis foundation, they have free water therapy sessions here at the local Y maybe there is something similar in your area?

Lol, if only we had a Y! I think there is one in Clarksburg, but it's 50 miles of winding roads just to get there!
