    Default Color changes in stools

This is a totally embarrassing question for me to pose, but an important one, and I cannot locate anything on this subject here in this forum, or on Google.

When we start this new way of eating, along with taking vitamins for the first time in our lives, can our stools be affected in color? If so, what are the color ranges? Is near-black one of them??

Sorry to bring such an embarrassing question to the forum. But I really need to know if anyone else has some insight on this.

    Thank you!

Oh gosh, pictures? LOL! No way!

I am taking Women's One a Day Petites, in which I take 2 a day. It has 18 mgs of iron per pill, equaling 36 mgs of iron a day.

Last nite, I did something different too. My 2 cups of salad veggies were sauteed mushrooms in olive oil and garlic, and I threw in 1/2 cup of red onions. And I ate the entire batch. It was yummy good.

I wonder if mushrooms have anything to do with color changes?

In any event, I have been worried about this.

It is probably the Iron causing the color change. I've not researched the mushrooms but it seems unlikely

    Black Stools

Iron usually causes stools to darken. The actual color of the stools depends on a number of factors, such as how much iron you're taking and whether you're taking other vitamins as well. Black, dark grey or maroon stools are all possible when taking iron.

Thank you, friends. I've been increasingly worried today about this but the iron thing must be it. I'm in otherwise great health but the black coloring had me deeply concerned.

My apologies for bringing up such an embarrassing subject that many of us may not even want to touch on. Your thoughts on this has helped me considerably to relax. Thanks again.

No problem. However, you may want to switch to a multi-vitamin that does NOT contain Iron. That is what Dr. Atkins recommended in the Book. I think the recommendation stems from the fact that this WOE is inherently iron rich and thus there is no need for Iron supplementation. That, and an excess of Iron can be dangerous.

Wow, I didn't realize this, kajlaw. I tried finding this info in my DANDR book but didn't see anything on the subject. I'll go look again.

The problem I have with vitamins is that the majority of them made for women are like horse pills. I found these One a Day Petites for Women and have been taking them because they are easy to swallow.

Do you or anyone else know of a smaller vitamin, less in iron content, that can be swallowed easily? Cutting the big ones in half don't help me much, as their sharp edges get stuck in my throat. Quite the fiasco.

    Thanks for this important info.

You should not take 2 of a one a day pill
You do not need all that stuff - one is plenty
I don't go against Dr. ATkins but for women who menstruate taking a few extra mili grams of iron is not going to be a problem Some weeks I take several hundred of milgrams to keep up with my anemia. (and yes my stool is very black - my "normal" colour.
So take these (but only one) till you can find something else without that will work for you
Most people look for senior meds or sometimes pills for me - as they often has no iron.
