| You should do at the very least 30 minutes of aerobic activity (walking, jogging, running, swimming, biking, etc.) most days of the week, with at the very least 15 minutes of strength-training every other day. The newer Food Pyramid recommendations are 60-90 minutes daily if you want to lose weight. If you're a complete couch potato, you'll need to gradually increase your exercise level to prevent injuries and things like that.

| EXERCISE IS KEY....not only to losing the weight, but permanently keeping it off! You might want to post this on the Exercise board for more ideas. Myself, I started out walking 1-2 miles in January 2002 and have since become a running addict, running 35 miles a week! Find something you enjoy that will raise your heartrate a minimum of 30 minutes a day and you'll be amazed as your body transforms! Betty

| Sun Run 4 miles Mon off Tues Run 4 miles Wed Run 3 miles walk one -- one hour Tae Bo Thurs Run 4 miles Fri Run 3miles walk one -one hour Tae Bo I started off with 30 min Tae Boe 3 times a week and gradually increased days and min. I just added the running two weeks ago (today started my 3rd week) and it has really made a difference. I think any movement is key. I think so many people don't exercise because they look at say one hour of Tae Bo or 4 miles and say OMG I can't do that. Do what ever you can. Dance to just one song. If you have kids play World Wide Wrestleing?sp Federation on your living room rug( works particularly well with my boys) Walk just one block, half a block. Do something everyday and as you get comfortable add in more. Before you know it you will be behind Betty in a 10K!! :icondance |

| It's hard to look at what other people are doing because it can be overwhelming (like texwife just said). So, instead of telling you what I'm doing now, I'll tell you what I did to get my butt off the couch: I bought a pedometer at Walmart ($4). My goal everyday was to try to hit 10,000 steps. I did this about twice a month at first. It was more fun seeing if I could go further than I did the day before. I would walk all the way around my building to check the mail instead of just walking out the front door. That would add like 200 steps. I'd run or march in place during commercials at night, that would add like 1000 steps over the course of prime time viewing. One 30 minute walk after dinner could be up to 5000 steps! On the days that I didn't do anything extra, my steps were like 2000-3000, which is disgusting! It was this realization that got me moving, then moving a little more. Once you get in the groove, then you can really start to figure out what you enjoy doing. |

| I am more on an advanced level. I started just walking, then after a few weeks, I added Pushups,Crunches and weight training. Now I do what is called "dinosaur training". Mon,Wed,Friday are heavy lifting, tues, thursday are my running days and then Saturday I run Hills. also, I just for fun, I ride a bike everyday around the town.

| Yes, I agree; do what you can do and then SLOWLY increase your time/pace. Those of us who have been doing this for several years didn't start out running 35 miles a week, I can tell you that!! 1 mile a day or every other ... for starters. ANYTHING. Just commit 100% to it. Set mini goals. You'll be amazed when you look back in a year to see what you've accomplished!! IF THIS REFORMED COUCH POTATO CAN DO IT, ANYBODY CAN!! Betty

| How efficient are you with the 1 mile on the treadmill? Is it easier to walk that distance now than it was when you began? If so, then it's time for you to bump up your exercise. You can do it one of two ways: either increase your distance (walk 1 1/2 miles) or increase the intensity by increasing your speed. You can also try walking a 1/2 mile on tuesdays and thursdays. Same thing with the weights you are using. Are they easier to lift now? If so, either increase the amount of the weight or increase the number of repetitions. As the exercises get easier, you have to increase your exercise intensity (and pretty soon you'll be running miles like ttdriver! )
