First off, you have to remember that Induction last a minimum of 14 days. Try to commit these days to doing as "clean" an Induction as possible. After the 14 days, you can move onto OWL Phase, where you will be able to "legally" incorporate fruits. I am a pasta/rice/potatoes junkie. When I began Atkins, I couldn't even walk down the grocery aisles with these products, nor could I look at them in magazines or even stand to see people eat them. So, I avoided them. I avoided them in the grocery store, I avoided looking at pictures of them and I tried to ignore people eating them. As a diabetic, you know that bread and some of the higher glycemic fruits don't do you any favors in terms of your blood sugars. So beyond getting it into your head that you need to get healthy, you need to commit to yourself and this diet. Instead of concentrating on foods you can't have, concentrate on the foods you can have. If you've been on a low fat diet, now is your chance to eat the high fat foods you couldn't eat: full fat cheeses, egg-based sauces, real cream, higher fat meats, etc. you might also want to check out the diabetes forum too. You can do it, Fran.

| You don't have to swear off bread forever .. just focus on your day to day achievements ... soon you will be at maintenance and able to indulge in whole grains and fruits .. trust me!! YOU ARE SO WORTH IT! Betty

| (Mat 5:30) If your right [hand] "BUN" cause you to stumble, cut it off, and throw it away from you: for it is profitable for you that one of your [members] "FOOD ADDICTIONS" should perish, and not your whole body be thrown [into] "OUT OF KETOSIS" [Gehenna]. At times we must take severe actions to do what we know is right. Your success is right ! |

| It's tough! We had our 4th of July cookout today...plenty of cake/ice cream/potatoes/breads...,but, I managed to hang tough! I almost gave in this evening as the induction was making me feel so lousy, not too mention cheated. I survived by eating a carb control fudge bar, and a white grape flavored sparkling water. I think I made out out fine on my carbs even with those. Hang in there!

| Tell me about it. I was told not to weigh myself, so I hadnt in afew days. 4th of July was tough. Parents bought cheese cake(which is my favorite thing in the world) and I almost gave in. I couldnt take it anymore, so the next morning I decided to weigh myself to see if this is actually worth it. How much weight had I lost in under a week? 12 pounds. Its worth it.

ttdriver is correct. Do the 14 day Induction properly. Then decide if you want to extend Induction alittle or if you want to move onto OWL, where you'll have a wider variety of foods to eat. If fruit is what you want, you can have fruit on OWL. So get the myth that Induction is how I'll be eating forever on Atkins. Atkins is so much more than Induction and you can decide if you want to stay on it longer or say hello to the wider food choices on OWL. One of the most common reasons people fall off the wagon is that they stay on Induction too long and get bored with the food selection. So if fruit is what you want back into your menu, move into OWL on Day 15.

| Most grocery stores are set up so that you have to walk through 'dangerous' (read THE BAKERY!!) areas as you go to the meat or veggies. Do what you gotta do....I used to hold my breath and stare straight ahead at where I was headed and not even let myself look at the treats. It works! Now, when I walk through there, I sometimes think "Gee I wish I had tried that (whatever treat I see) before I started Atkins! Oh well, I've pretty much eaten everything out there, I'm sure I wouldn't be too surprised by how it tastes, and I know what that crap will do to me so I'm better off without it." After a few weeks on Atkins, when I put two and two together and realized the benefits of cutting sugar/flour/etc out of my diet, I started to look at the bakery stuff as if it was poison..because it really is poison to me. As mentioned there is light at the end of the tunnel and I'm close to the point where I can have whole grain bread...but it's certainly not a big deal to me anymore, I've eaten very well this last year without it. Follow the book very closely, and just keep in mind that you'll get your fruit back and your rolls back eventually. Did you know that rhubarb is on the 1 cup veggie list? You can cook down a cup of raw rhubarb to see how much it makes and add that in here and there to get a fruit flavour burst. Because it's so concentrated it doesn't take much to satisfy...try putting a tsp on a piece of cream cheese!! yum! |
