| Life is going to always be throwing stuff like that at you. Do what you did, and stay in the moment and make the choice to pass it by. The way I look at it is that I've eaten funnel cakes (or chocolate bars, or birthday cakes or fancy desserts etc) before and I know how they taste, so am I really missing anything? Well, yes...I'm missing the sugar/carb rush it'll give me and the crash that'll happen later on. Oh yes, and the guilt that I've thrown a wrench into the works. Do I really need that? Nope...not really. You can also tell yourself that in time, when you are on Maintenance, you can have a bite or two of these sorts of things. By then you'll have developed portion control and have a strong sense of respect for your body and what you choose to ingest. Think nutritionally when faced with something like this and ask yourself if your body needs that, or if it's just your brain trying to con you into thinking you need this to be happy. You did good today....way to go! |

| I took my kids to the carnival this week too and wasn't tempted. Before I started this WOE, I reasoned with myself every day how I deserved a nice dessert. Now, I realized how warped that thinking was.

| Boy do I know where you are coming from. I bought ice cream today and didn't want any. Didn't beg the kids for a french fry when I took them to McD's. I also made two home made cakes for my son and stepdaughters birthday and kept myself from licking the spoon(or bowl). I will be serving it tomorrow, but I don't have the craving to eat it. My sons girlfriend was telling me..."you are going to eat a piece of that cake". I told her no, I did'nt need to eat it. It would just make me feel bad physically and very guilty. Both of those I don't need. Keep up the good work! Michele |

Over the last 17 months that I've been on Atkins I've learned SO much about how our society combines food and social activities. This makes sense of course, because the best way to gather folks together is to feed them, but it's things like the birthday cake, or the dessert, or the icecream when you're at the beach that hold special meaning. I had to learn that when I went out for dinner with friends or a birthday/anniversary/Christmas/etc party that it was about socializing and that while yes, we would eat when we were there, it was not about the food. I turned 42 last week without having a bite of cake...in fact, I didn't even have a cake!! We had fruit salad, and it was more important to me that all my friends be there than what the cake was going to be. And believe you me, that cake was always the cornerstone of my birthday in the past...my poor bf I'm sure would just cringe when my birthday rolled around when it came to getting me a cake. I wish you all could talk to my friends and family in person and know that I'm not exaggerating...lol...gosh, talk about warped thinking. I used to be the person who forced people to eat my desserts, much like your son's girlfriend. I wanted everyone to share in everything and I didn't realize how selfish I was being by pushing them into having the dessert I made. It's crazy, isn't it?! |
