Default I have a question....

I'm a little confused about induction. I don't have the big Atkins book, I'm using The Atkins Essentials, which gives all the rules for each phase, including food lists. It keeps talking about limiting carbs to 20 gr per day, but then goes on to say that most of your carbs will come from your salad greens and other vegetables. Does that mean that your 2-3 cups of salad greens and 1 cup of cooked veggies is all the carbs for each day? I haven't been eating any other carbs and I'm having some trouble. I looked at some of your recipes for induction, and see things like rolls made with Atkins baking mix, so do you then forego the salad? How can I find out how many carbs are in my salad mix? THanks so much for your help!!

One way to track carbs is to use www.fitday.com which is a free tool where you can list everything you eat by type and quantity. The programme works out what amount tf carbs etc you have eaten and even gives you the ratios of fat/protein/carbs (we look for a 65%/30%/5% ratio on induction)
It isnt the easiest programme to use but there is a helpful sticky at the top of this forum you should read to help you.
Once you have opened a free 'account' and listed what you eat you can then make it 'public' and post its url here in the 'Review my menu' forum so people can see the entries and help you 'tweak' your menu if needed.
The complete list of induction allowed foods is posted in our FAQ forum, as well as a wallet-sized list in the 14-day forum as a 'sticky'. I can't remember how full/accurate the list in the 'essentials' book is - here we follow the rules laid down in DANDR 2002 so copy and print out the list here instead.
What are the Rules of Induction? - the rules of induction.
and here
What foods can be eaten on Induction? - the list of allowed foods for induction.

Here we suggest you stick to the allowed list - so if the ingredients in a food are not there, dont eat it. I think many of the mixes available come into this category, so if you want to use them to vary your menu do check the ingredients first!!

Most of the processed 'low-carb' items are useful later on your Atkins journey when you have reached the OWL rung that contains those 'not-induction' ingredients.

Hope this helps.

Oh - forgot to answer your question about carbs.
Are you eating eggs, cheese etc? In that case you are having some carbs in those. A large egg is about 0.6 of a carb, so a 3-egg omelette would have nearly two and a half carbs.
And we are even supposed to add one carb per serving of sweetener too!

What we need to make sure is that over half of our 20 net daily carbs come from our veggies.

I second Elizellen...go get a fitday account. It is a really useful tool! And those 2 cups salad and 1 cup other vegie...consider those a MUST.

Default Re: I have a question....

you see recipes in our induction forum for Atkins bake mix???? Is not2late and the mods on vacation???? Atkins bake mix should not be in our induction asd we use the 2002 edition induction which clearly says in rule 5 eat nothing not on the iacceptable foods lists and the bake mix ain't there! Atkins Bake Mix Ingredients: SuproŽ brand isolated soy protein, soy flour, glucono delta lactone, potassium bicarbonate, sodium phosphate, oat fiber, polydextrose (LitesseŽ), potassium chloride. As you can see several of the ingredients in the bake mix are OWL higher rung foods.

Dr Atkins' rules for induction are the majoritiy of your carbs must come from your veggies so if you eat your 3 cups and have say 10 net carbs of them then you can use some of your remaining carbs in your cheese servings, eggs, spices salad dressing and such.

Happy low carbing

I think you might have been referring to recipes on www.atkins.com for induction - as far as I know none of the recipes here on ADBB for induction would suggest using the baking mix (unless it was one of the members posting their pet recipe not knowing that these products are not allowed on induction)
Here on our 14-day induction forum there are recipes for rolls and wraps that ARE induction allowed, so use them instead.
Induction Recipe Basics--More recipes added

Just a caution about recipes on www.atkins.com - many of them seem to be writted with a view to promoting their own processed foods and mixes and they seem to have lost the sense of sticking to the rules laid down by Dr Atkins for induction.
He clearly states
Quote:
5. Eat nothing that isn't on the Acceptable Foods list. And that means absolutely nothing. Your "just this one taste won't hurt" rationalization is the kiss of failure during this phase of Atkins..
From the rules of induction posted on the www.atkins.com website - a copy of which is on ADBB What are the Rules of Induction?
