| The candy you bought probably contained sugar alcohols. If you use the search function of this board for the sugar alcohols, you'll find lots of threads dealing with them. You now know that certain smells can trigger cravings in you. What you can do now is figure out ways of dealing with these triggers that do not involve eating food! In the future, you can either bring an appropriate dessert or you can eat before going to your friends dinner. That way, you will be satisfied with whatever vegetable side dish and meat you can eat.

| Some people count sugar alcohol carbs, some don't. Some get really sick from eating them and are sugar alchohol intolerant, others aren't. They might trigger a stall or aid to a stall in your weight loss, for me I eat a couple every once in awhile and I've never had a problem. I think you made an ok choice in a tough situation (next time think about bringing your own dessert like Megs said as well as your own salad: a nice cheesecake, or the party cakes Lizellen just posted the recipe for). Just try to recover the best you can and throw those candies away if they made you so ill so they don't tempt you in the future.

| I pretty much always bring my own treat with me when I go to people's places. Mind you, now that I can have some fruit, my friends have been kind enough to have fruit salad, but just in case, I bring a little something. I had a similar experience as you (but I didn't eat anything, I just watched people eat the strawberry cheesecake I had made) and it almost ended up with bf and I at each other's throats because of me having to deal with the frustration of it all, so I learned my lesson well. |
