Default Heart to heart: Confessions of a Newbie Struggling with induction

Hi All,

I have just started doing the Atkins diet again, I have tried unsuccessfully to complete a clean induction 2 times before about 2 or 3 years ago and dropped the whole idea. I had a baby 8 and a half months ago and started exercising after 2 weeks and have been exercising vigourously for 8 months, sometimes 4,5,6,7 days a week but an average of 4 days a week but have been unable to shift even 1 of the 21 pounds I have been trying to shift for 7 years.

In desperation I got a personal trainer 2 months ago and while I have slowly been loosing inches I have not lost any weight on the scales but all the time getting fitter mixing up my exercise regieme I am actually fitter than I have been in 15 years! This is poor consolation for no actual weight loss on the scales. Up until last week Thursday I was breast feeding and could not go on any diet. I decided after keeping a food a food dairy which showed I averaged 10 slices of bread and marmalade a day (albeit linseed and soya bread) and even though I was not eating much else ( I am a busy mum with 3 sons under 5) I could see my high carb intake was the problem.

Since Thursday I started to cut down carbs and from friday stuck to induction rules except lucozade sport or a banana before my work outs and the odd Atkins breakfast bar. On Monday I decided to do a clean induction which was going well till yesterday when I had a bad day and had 5 breakfast bars, half a low car milksahke and 2 decaff coffees with 3 packets of splenda each in them and a sulcrose sweetened drink!!!! I also had a small salad with chicken, 4 sall low carb susages and a little cheese and 8 glasses of water I did not go over my 20grm carb allowance but obviously this is not ideal.

My problem is that i have been a unable to wean myself off sugar or sugar substituites as I had been a diet coke, splenda and aspharmatane junkie for years . If I did not have the bars and the drinks yeterday I would have definitely fallen off the wagon. Reading through the book yesterdaty I realised part of the problem was not taking he vitamins suggested I have since started taking L-glutamine for sugar cravings and have ordered all the other suggested ones for indution as well as L carnitine and CoQ10 for the metatobic resitant as I am sure I am after dabling in all sorts of diets for years. The positive thing is I am in ketosis and have been for about 3 days.

I am 5 feet 8 inches weigh 154 pounds or about 70kg I am looking to loose 10kg or 21 pounds. It may not seem much but I have been trying for so long. I have

Please help, I need support, hand holding , and lots of suggestions!!!! I need to be able to complete a clean induction free of all sugar substitutes and processed food.

I started again today, so far so good

Thank You
Daphne

Hi and welcome.

Congrats on your fat loss. Dr. Atkins wrote that the loss of inches was proof that fat was emptying from your cells. So losing inches is a better predictor of fat loss than the scale. Furthermore, if you are exercising, you will be increasing your muscle mass. 1 pound of muscle weighs the same as 1 pound of fat. So if you lose 1 pound of fat and gain 1 pound of muscle, the old scale will have you at the same weight.

It's good you are reading the book because many people don't or they don't read it thoroughly. What you eat during Induction is very important. For example, alot of people skip the vegetables because they either don't like vegetables or they think the lower the amount of carbs, the better their results. Both groups only do themselves more harm than good.

As for the bars, shakes and other convenience "foods", we don't recommend them because in our collective experience on ADBB, those 'foods' cause weight loss stalls or slow downs in many people. It's better to eat whole, natural, minimally processed foods.

Sugar substitutes are another staller for some folks. So we recommend you follow the rules and limit yourself to 3 servings of sweetener daily.

Daphne,

While of course Megs had the correct answer ... and in an ideal world ... However, if you need modifications to get started, go with the modifications. Start induction while incorporating as much splenda as you need to start. After you've dropped the sugar and refined carbs, then start weaning yourself off splenda. And congratulate yourself for making the first step rather than beating yourself up for not doing it perfectly right off the bat!

Welcome Daphne. In my opinion your body could be starving. I doesn't sound as if aren't eating enough food or staying full enough for your body to trust releasing the fat stores.

Set a permanent routine where you eat real food, in large portions at least 3 meals a day, plus snacks. Make sure you get a taste of butter and meat fat at every meal. Liberal portions of meat, fish and/or eggs at every meal, 4 ounces of cheese per day and 3 cups of veggies. Have a portion of veggies at every meal. Eat a big breakfast and stay full.

Give up the bars, and the other artificial crap. It isn't what your body is craving. When you stick to a clean induction long enough for your body to go into ketosis, and allow your palate to change, you will understand where I am coming from.

Don't judge this induction by your previous experiences.

Please list your body stats.

Hi All,

I am on day 4 of a squeeky clean induction, I read the book in greater detail and once I started taking Vitamin supplements things improved, I am even able to do most of my really tough gym work out but my stamina is not up to normal yet as i am unable to run for 50 min as I used to before Atkins, but from reading posts and book I hear at about the 2 week mark my strength will come back in full. I found drinking lots of water up to 5 liters a day helped and I even managed to go out to dinner with friends and to a children's party which are big weaknesses for me normally but did not cheat!!! L-glutamine for sugar cravings turned out to be a real life saver . I also found out increase fat intake slightly by frying my chicken made the difference. I can finally see light at the end of the tunnel!!! I can actually see my body changing before my eyes it is wonderful . Unfortunately I have not weighed or measured myself at all I should do that very soon, I aim to go and buy a scale and a tape measure tommorrow. So I can motivate myself further

Thanks for the support
