Default Tofu on induction?

Can someone please please tell me if firm tofu is allowed on induction and if so, by chance, do you know how many net carbs it has, because i've looked all over and everywhere gives me different amounts, and i'm a vegetarian and I'm desperately sick of eating eggs!!!!!

If you're a vegetarian, than you really can't do induction if you're not eating meats. But the good news is you CAN do OWL. Tofu is a soy product. Soy is a legume, which is rung 6 of OWL.

I know there are some vegetarians who were willing to eat fish or chicken on induction. If you choose not to, read up on the OWL sections of DANDR to see what rung you can start at.

Hopefully some vegetarians or "pros" will be along to help you out...

Tofu is the "soy cheese" mentioned in the Cheese footnote in the Induction Acceptable Foods list. So it is allowed. The problem is that the carbs vary from type to type, brand to brand, so you need to do alot of label reading. In the FAQ section of this board there is a thread about doing Atkins vegetarian style.

Oops! Sorry...I have never seen that footnote...I assumed it was grouped with all the other soy stuff. My apologies!

Default Re: Tofu on induction?

The soy cheese thing is kind of odd. Back in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s, tofu was sometimes called 'soy cheese' because the process for making tofu is similar to making dairy cheese. Anyhow, in the early 2000s, vegan companies began mass producing a cheese that mimicked dairy cheese in flavor (supposedly) and was made from soy.

The soy cheese in the Cheese footnote is tofu. The same soy cheese is mentioned in the 1992 DANDR and called "soy cheese (tofu)". Also in Dr. Atkins New Diet Carbohydrate Gram Counter, it states that tofu is allowed during Induction.

So to make a long story short, tofu is allowed during Induction. But the carb count varies brand to brand and tofu type to tofu type. So if you do choose to incorporate soy into your Atkins---read the labels! And be mindful of the serving size. I've seen 5 ounce blocks of tofu with 2 grams per serving---the serving being 1/5 of that 5 ounce block.
