Default Is age an issue?

Help, I haven't noticed any change since I began the induction seven days ago. I'm a female age 54, post menopausal, and relatively active. The only change noticed by my husband was the breath thing. Anybody have any ideas? I don't believe that our metabolism changes as we age, I think we're just more sedentary.

Charts I've seen all reflect higher ideal weight the older you get. Also, the body's energy needs would naturally decline if your metabolic rate has slowed. If your level of activity consitently decreased as you aged, it's only natural the amount of muscle you have (which burns fuel) would also decrease, thus slowing your metabolism.
The issues at hand here are what amount do you need to lose, which will influence how much you can expect to lose during induction, and what you are eating and drinking.

Try posting a complete, detailed day's intake in "review my menu" thread. If anyone spots a potential culprit to your progress, they should be able to guide you in fixing it.

Default Re: Is age an issue?

I don't know about the change in metabolism thing, I think it does slow. Even if we're active. I say this because I have several 40 something friends at the YMCA who have never been over-weight and have always been dedicated to exercise since their 20's and they seem to notice they are gaining some weight even though their life-style remains consistent. HOWEVER, I don't think this is a death sentence to being over-weight. Think of how bad it would be for us if we didn't control what we can!!! With that being said, I would like to encourage you by saying, are you measuring? I know there were MANY times the scale DIDN'T move, but my inches were disappearing!!! Try that and see if you can see any measureable results. If you have not taken starting measurements, I encourage you to do so. The other way you can track measurable results is by making sure you have a thorough cholesterol panel done on you at the beginning of the program. Be sure to ask for overall chol., as well as a break down in your LDL, HDL, and tri-glycerides. Three months into my program, my tri-glycerides dropped over 100 points. My HDL is now above 60. My Dr. was totally floored!!! So, as you work the program, you will also be able to be encouraged by the internal changes in your body that are not visible. Pounds, inches and cholesterol measurements have all 3 been key to keeping me motivated when I wanted to quit. It never fails, when one wasn't changing, the other was, so....I kept on going knowing that things WERE HAPPENING!!!!!

Keep checking in and your gonna do fine if you follow the guidelines. And when you don't feel like following them, come on by and see us here at the board for encouragement, because we all have been there and sometimes go back there. So we can relate.

Have a great day!

Default Re: Is age an issue?

I started this WOE at age 49. Sure, age can be a factor, but the main thing that attributes to success here is doing the program. Maybe if I were younger...I'd have done better. Maybe.

Make a plan to incorporate the program into your life. Some people (regardless of age) are more active and in better physical condition than others. When I first began...I had female problems and bad knees. I've had three major surgeries since beginning this WOE. I think that no matter what our age, occupation, location, or other differences we have...we need to pin-point our plan to work through those obstacles and just keep going.

You'll notice more positive changes as you keep going. Take your measurements - get active with the others here that are making it happen in their lives. Being involved, adjusting the plan to fit into your unique life and not giving up will get you to goal and help you keep a positive attitude. You can do it, we are all here to help!

Age is DEFINATELY a factor.... The first time I did Atkins, I was 30.... breezed right through it.... lost from 206 to 150 in six months or so. Kept it off nearly a decade (until - you know - I decided to eat whatever I wanted and promptly gained it all back!).

This time, the weight is coming off, altho not as it did the last time. I'm having to work at it.... be diligent. Once I reach my goal, I am going to stay with it - for life. I can't imagine trying it again in another decade!!!

Keep with it - it WILL work!!!

Thanks you guys. I will keep at it. I am a little discouraged, but I have to do something about my weight. I've gained all of my weight around my midsection so it's critical that I lose it cause it's so unhealthy. Thanks again for your encouraging words.

I'm on day 5 and I've lost 7 lbs so far and I'm 62. Don't let anyone convince you that you can't lose weight as you get older. Yes, it's tough and it doesn't fly off like it did when you were younger, but you can do it.
