Default Which type of protein powder ?

Hi

Can I use Protein Isolate on induction? The ingredients are pure pea protein isolate and has only 1.8g carbs per 40g serving

If I can't use it, is whey protein allowed on induction and what should I be looking for on the label? the lowest I've seen is about 2.4g carbs per serving which is why I considered the pea protein instead.

Many thanks
EH

No protein powders on induction.

Whey protein is considered dairy and allowable on the dairy rung.

Soy protein is allowed on legumes rung.

Pea protein is starchy vegetable, so it would be appropriate on that rung.

Well Whey protein comes from Whey which is derived from cheese, and we are allowed to have that on induction. Whats the difference?

During induction we are only allowed to have those foods that are on the list of acceptable foods. There are other cheeses that aren't allowed on induction either, like ricotta and cottage cheese, or any fresh cheese either.

After induction we move into the Ongoing Weight Loss phase and add foods that fall into the specific categories as laid out by doctor Atkins. First is more vegetables, THEN dairy. Whey protein, fresh cheeses, half n half, milk, yogurt and the like is acceptable during that phase. Not induction.

Cheese is only cheese when the whey is gone - whey is not derived from cheese, it is a byproduct of cheese and is completely diffrerent in composition from cheese.

You are right, the casein, or "curd", and a portion of the milk-fat are separated out to make cheese. Then its sent through filters to seperate the protein from the lactose. Which is what we don't want.

Although I don't remember DANDR 2002 Addressing this, I still don't see the problem. Its just protein, even more pure than the protein in beef and eggs.

contains 90% or more protein and very little (if any) fat and lactose

I see your point. Perhaps the problem (if there is one!) is that is contains very little fat, which we definitely do want, especially during induction. But you are right, it is primarily protein.

yeah, but its fat we could do without since there are so many other sources we get it from. If anything I like to you use these shakes for after workout meals.

Default Re: Which type of protein powder ?

I often have a significant problem keeping my fat high enough, and at this point anyway if I let it slide I don't lose weight. So for me it would be an issue, but depending on the rest of the their diet I suppose for others it would not be and I imagine that as I progress it will be less of an issue for me too.

My guess is it was not included in the list of allowed foods because Dr A did emphasise the value of eating as much unprocessed food as possible, not just on induction but permanently. Though then again, cheese and butter are 'processed' milk and they are allowed. I dunno, maybe it was an omission.

To be honest though I've never in my entire life eaten (drank?) any kind of protein powder or shake or any food of that kind and don't really intend to, so I should probably just butt out here.
