There is no such thing as induction friendly shakes. But to answer your question...Yes.

Foodaddict, I would just stay away from those Atkins Shakes, bars, etc. etc. forever. It's a commercial thing but they really should not been seen as an option. Well, unless it's a real emergency. In that case, you're better off eating a beef jerkey or something like that. Know what I mean jelly bean? LOL!

Default Re: Do Induction Friendly Atkins Shakes Keep You From Getting Into Ketosis?

Hi All,

I am concerned now about the Atkins shakes, the Induction menu on the Atkin website has the shake as one of the acceptable foods to consume. I personally was relieved to see that shake onathe acceptable list. It has 5 carbs which is within the breakfast limit. I don't eat anything when I drink the it is filling and I like the fiber that's in it. It does help with constipation. . I can't do breakfast daily, never have been big on breakfast, so the shake is fine. I am on my 6 day of Induction and I have loss 6 pounds...three of those days, I had a chocolate shake in the morning. The shake keeps me full for 4 hours.

Please let me know the problem with it, right now it makes for a tolerable breakfast.
Thanks,
Rose

The problem with the shakes and the bars, etc. are that they are not really allowed on the true Atkins plan. This site is based on the 2002 edition of Dr. Atkins' book. The website is no longer in line with what his originial WOL is based on. The website is about money and profit. That's why it says that the bars, shakes, etc. are allowed. If you look closely at the ingredients for the bars it lists nuts, fruit, etc. which are NOT induction friendly. I'm not sure what's in the shakes but they are not meant for induction. They will stall you.

It's sad to know that after Dr. Atkins' passing the company no longer cares about the patrons actually getting healthy (which was his main focus of this WOL) but rather selling the shakes and bars. Stay away from them unless you want a stall...

If you do want to include the shakes in your induction, then do make sure that ALL its ingredients are allowed! So no whey or soy protein for example!

Also take care that you are not overeating (drinking) protein, and see if your shake and anything else you eat along with it add up to the 65% fat/30% protein/5% carbs rule of thumb. This ratio is not written down in DANDR but is one arrived at by a Dukes University analysis of the suggested menus for induciton in DANDR.

Remember Atkins is NOT a 'high protein diet' whatever it's naysayers claim, but a highfat way of eating.

One easy way to do this is to open a (free) account with www.fitday.com where the programme works this out for you.

Finally a word of caution - the old Atkins company site used to have a whole web page where it agreed that for many people eating/drinking their products 'may inhibit weightloss' and if that was the case people should stop or at the least cut down on eating/drinking them.

To my mind for a company to even accept that something 'might' result from consuming their products raises a red flag and implies that it is a fairly frequent occurrance, so bear this in mind too and try not to jeapordise (sp?) any weightlosses you might already be having.

As a non-breafaster before Atkins I understand how hard it is to break a habit of not eating till lunchtime, but with careful planning you might be able to work out some foods that you are happy to eat first thing.

I make a crustless quiche at the weekend using cream/cheese/eggs/meat/veggies that slices into 6 portions which are easy to grab and eat either hot or cold without any fuss through the week as well as giving me a good balance of fat/protein/carbs. (I am so NOT a morning person )
