| I know some people that did. I have a drink every now and then but I waited until after induction. Obviously its not recommended but its your choice what you want to do. I would really try and hold off if you can but if you do decide to drink, stick with things like vodka and soda which has zero carbs.

| I agree with Megs. Step back and ask yourself if that drink is really needed/worth it? Me personally, I dont put that poison in me body for over 2 1/2 years now,(and counting I might add). But unless you are addicted to it and need to stop th eshakes or something, I wouldnt do it. God Bless,Joe |

| I wonder if sugar alcohols have the same side effect which would explain why some people stall when eating frankenfood replacement bars and such...

| That's an interesting thought but the body processes sugar alcohols much differently than simple alcohols like ethanol. Sugar alcohols are polyols and are much more complex molecules. Some of them like erythritol and xylitol are all natural and have a lot of health benefits - much better for you than splenda which is artificial. Sorry about the nerd-out. I studied forensic science in grad school for the past two year so I took lots of organic chem and biochem.

| In every other "diet" I've done, I've always treated myself to some alcohol, I did the Bacardi and Diet Soda thing... But honestly, I never really had any remarkable success -- until now, and this is the only time I've really kept it by the book. So to answer your question, yes, I had results even when having some liquor, but I've had even better results when I avoid it. I live in North America's party capital....it's hard to avoid alcohol when the bars are open 24 hours and there's always someone you know in town ready to party and have a few drinks. In the past it was hard to avoid, but like Megs said, this time I chose to put my health and weight loss above all. Now, I try my hardest to avoid going out to such events all together, I'd rather not have to deliberate over it. Although, I have told myself that if it came down to it, I would hold a cocktail glass with ice water and a straw and sip on that to fit in socially. Hope that helps?! |

The OH group stuck onto the sugar alcohol molecules supposedly prevents that molecule from being broken down and/or absorbed by your body. But in the case of ethanol or even methanol (which is poisonous and you shouldn't be drinking in the first place!), the body IS able to breakdown the molecules. Ethanol is a toxin and needs to be broken down in your liver in order for your body to get rid of it. By the way, all those "heart healthy" benefits of drinking alcohol daily is a tight rope walk. If you drink 1 "drink" daily for a woman and 2 "drinks" daily for a man, you lower your heart disease risk factors. If you exceed those amounts, you actually increase your heart disease risk factors. That's why if I ever get enough money, I'm going to invest it in pharmaceutical companies---with the number of binge drinkers in the college aged students, I figure their hearts and bodies will give out sooner than expected and the pharmaceutical companies will be forced to develop "life saving" medications for them. 1 drink is 5 fliud ounces non-fortified wine, 3.5 ounces fortified wine (sherry, port, etc.), 1.5 ounces hard liquor, 12 ounce beer. So if you're a male and you pour down 3 beers daily, your heart disease risk has increased.
