| Hi, I was in you shoes in 2003............. My gynecologist told me to start the Atkins Diet and make it a lifestyle change. My Dr. explained it to me like this........We put fuel in our vehicles to burn. Putting fat into your body is like putting fuel in your car, it takes fuel to burn fuel............therefore, it take FAT to burn FAT.......... |

| well i've got the book and i plan on taking tonight to read through it and keep reading it until it really "hits" home. part of me thought - "ok well, i'm technically not starting until monday - let's go out for one last hurrah for dinner tonight"...but i squashed that thought faster than I thought it - not after reading all these posts and really truly wanting to start a new eating plan. so I came home and my fiance had already made me a chicken dish with a big salad & vegees on the side. my fiance rocks! but anyways - off to read my book!

| Congrats on getting the book! Best start always...and glad to hear you squashed that one last hurrah thought....your body will thank you...and starting already. You're one step ahead of yourself...enjoy! oh, he's a keeper! No wonder you're marrying him...smart, senseable, and cooks, too. Just remember...each day is a new journey no matter what, make this way of eating a way of eating for life, and most importantly find an exercise you love and do it. Best wishes!

| In all honesty, until you understand what you are doing and additionally SEEING the results, your mind will try and say whoooo now. Which is why you do induction and follow it. The foods you are allowed on induction won't allow you to revert back to your low fat foods. Also, you can concentrate on using good fats also until you becomes more comfortable eating more fat and seriously don't worry about the calories you are eating right now. My favorite thing to do if i find myself eating less fat than i should be in a day -- i add more olive oil to my cooking for the day - i.e., add it to my salad dressing or simply over my salad greens or veggie dishes, in my cooking. This is a good "trick" for me to get the fat in but not notice it on those panic days. You will find because you are eating higher fat foods you will become fuller easier and faster and therefore, eat less throughout the day. The eating 5-6 times a day will also help you recognize when you are full easier because you know when you become hungry you can eat again. When you start taking note of the success along WITH the food you are actually eating, your mindset will begin to change. Just take it a day at a time, follow the plan for induction and use that time to help you with the change of understanding the difference. cani

| I had the same kind of difficulty. In fact, it still kind of concerns me sometimes. But the more I read about Atkins, there are some posts here with study results, the more comfortable I become, though I admit I still get worried a little sometimes when a friend starts telling me how awful what I am doing is. However, I've lost almost 50 pounds since starting in September, and have noticed HUGHE improvements in blood sugar realted problems I was having - no more hypoglycemia headaches which were an almost constant problem before, much less moody, upset, down etc . . . I know I have a problem with carbs and sugar, and I know that I have never felt this good or lost this much weight so easily or quickly before. So I tell myself if I feel so much better, how can this not be better for me than what I was doing before (low-fat alternating with being hungry and going off plan and no dieting) when overall I felt bad most of the time. In fact, I didn't even realize how bad I felt before until after doing Atkins for a while and feeling so much better. So while a fear pops into my head once in a while, I am committed to doing this! I had blood tests and blood pressure measured before I started, and plan to redo them after a year. I figure a year of eating this way won't hurt me and hopefully the tests will confirm that this way of eating is improving my health. Similrly, when I did Induction I told myself I was in such a bad situation, that two weeks of this way of eating could not make matters any worse. So I tried it and it worked so well that I told myself the same thing about doing it for a year.

| Thank you guys SOOO much for all of the replies!!! Like I said - I know it's going to take a while for me to get my head around being "allowed" to actually EAT more (a lot more) fat than I'm used to - but if I want to do this plan right, what other choice do I have? I can't just eat salad the rest of my life! lol. but yeah...like I said - I'll start off slow and hopefully I'll get there. Everyone's losses on this board (shoot, in this thread alone!) are so inspiring - and I WILL be a thin bride at my wedding, darnit! And like the last person's post said, how other people always tell her that it's not healthy or right...even though my fiance wants to be helpful - of course this is his major concern too because even last night I brought the subject up to him and he was all, "well, fat IS unhealthy"...and he himself has lost weight in the past, used to work out a lot - and likes to be healthy...but yeah - as much as I love him I really do need to do this for myself (course, we just bought a house together and plan on living together/married for the rest of our lives...) So I know that'll actually be another hurdle is really committing myself to this plan now that someone else is around and "involved" (when I did weight watchers it was just me, myself, and I)... I WILL do this though. It's a new day. Saturday January 3rd - and I haven't eaten anything yet this morning (just woke up) - and even though we won't go grocery shopping until tomorrow I plan to do my best that I can today to stay away from anything I shouldn't eat and eat as many vegees and protein I can get my hands on today - then I'll make my grocery list and menu for the week and I WILL do this!

| I'm a big fan of Dr. Michael Eades (co-author of Protein Power) and his blog is full of fascinating posts that destroy the myths about our diets. Here's a post he wrote about low-fat that I thought you might find interesting. Hope this helps. I know that you will find low-carb the way to go to good health! http://www.proteinpower.com/drmike/c...diet/#more-206 |
