Default Re: Need ideas for between meal snacks and mid-meals

A couple of suggestions for snacking are:

I eat herbed cream cheese on celery like someone above mentioned. Albeit it is.... MORE....cheese, I find that it is something I look forward to as a "treat"

I found these Pepperoni / Cheese packs in the grocery store, they only have 1 carb per pack and it is like a 6 inch pepperoni stick standing beside a 6 inch piece of cheddar cheese and ya kind eat'em both together. If you get the spicy pepperoni it kinda takes a bit of the boredom out of the accepatable foods we are allowed to eat.

Chicken Ceasar Salad with Parmesan is prolly the meal I eat most often and through doing this diet in the past, I know every single restaurant in Vancouver that serves Casesar Salad and am a total pro on who makes incredible/decent/crappy CS's.

You might wanna make this a game and go to a differernt restaurant every day for lucnh and have their Chicken Caesar Salad. Soon you'll know who's the best in your town.

Here is what I use for snacks when I need one -- any of the following:

flax cookies
celery with cream cheese
1 cup alfalfa sprouts (.4 carb)
1/2 c. sliced jimica fried with butter and cinnamon tastes a lot like fried apples
7 medium radishes (1 carb)
broccoli/cauliflower with/or without something to dip them in
deviled eggs
1/2 c sliced cucumber

I know you are analysing the reason for fresh cheeses being an OWL rung 2 addition rather than an induction allowed food and have formed your own opinion on whether they can be utilised by you on induction, but it still says in DANDR 2002 which is the book we follow here on ADBB that fresh cheeses are not allowed on induction - only aged cheeses (hard and soft), tofu (Dr Atkins knew it as being called soy cheese) and cream cheese.

As far as I know the reason for not having ricotta and other fresh cheeses on induction is the way they are made, rather than any added ingredients.

You could substitute cream cheese for most ricotta-included recipes I would have thought. (Never tried it myself as I don't like the taste of ricotta or cottage cheese)

Oh - some snacks I like which do not include cheese are:
a sweet red pepper stuffed with paté
celery sticks filled with paté
flax crackers (made from equal volume of ground flax/linseed and water) spread with paté

Hi Elizellen,

Is the paté you use home-made? If so, do you have a link to the recipe? I used to have a good paté recipe, but can't find it. If it is a shop bought one, what type and where do you get it? The ones I've checked in the shops so far all have something 'illegal' in them. I mean, sugar in meat paté? Talk about not necessary!

errr ummm... you are not doing atkins then. You are doing ummmm the ariesdragon diet. But it has nothing to do with atkins. You can't pretend to know why some foods are banned at certain atkins levels. He doesn't just want us to stay under 20 carbs eating any foods but stay under 20 carbs eating the foods he has listed. Anyway good luck with the ariesdragon diet!

Try the one minute breakfast muffins and use one as a snack. You can make them savory or sweet and it is a change of pace from meat and cheese. I like to get a plate with some olives, a tiny bit of cheese, some veggie sticks, and smoked salmon. Kind of an antipasto plate. Other things to use are roasted peppers, artichoke hearts, grilled eggplant and zucchini slices with a little olive oil, or a deviled egg. Maybe a marinated (by me) mushroom or two. It adds to my veggies and is all induction friendly. Any combo of these is good. Usually I eat a snack plate early and then a much smaller dinner later.

My favorite is roasted veggies. I just toss some veggies with oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper and roast until they're slightly browned on top. I keep the veggies sliced up in the fridge (my favorite is a combination of asparagus, string beans, and a little onion) to roast up quickly. It only takes a few minutes and its so delicious I make a whole baking sheet full and I barely get my little cup full after my carb-eating family gets at it.

I also highly recommend the celery and cream cheese. Its been one of my favorite snacks since I was little. Also, I wrap small bundles of asparagus with bacon or thin sliced ham, splash with a little olive oil and grill them. If there are any leftovers (there ususally aren't) they reheat well in the oven.

As far as flax snacks and stuff like that, I try to stay away from it. I really feel like that's just the carb addict side of me trying to find a replacement and its not much of a step to work my way back towards allowing myself to cheat on pancakes and breads.

If you want to modify the plan and eat things that you're not supposed to by rationalizing it, that's fine. However, if you just wait awhile, you can have those things legally and it will likely enhance your results to introduce them later on. I think a big part of the plan is learning to enjoy different types of foods and use food for fuel instead of eating according to what we crave.

I have used some from this website Pate Recipes
Many of them have only 'induction-legal' ingredients
