Lucky for all of us----potatoes are a New World crop and were only introduced into the global cuisine in the 1600s. Prior to that time, other root crops like turnips and radishes were used. I've made seafood soups using onion, garlic and celery only as the base for the cooking liquid. It turns out well.

| I've used radishes and turnips in place of potatoes in chicken "no noodle" soup recipe and a crock pot roast and veggies recipe. I would also use onion and celery. All legal. All yummy in soups and stews! |
