Default Back on the Atkins train!

Hello everyone,

I have made a decision to go back on Atkins although I said to myself I would never go back on it coz I always fail. But I have just weighed myself and i'm 10st13! which is huge, seeing as i'm 5'2'', my BMI is 27.8 which is overweight.

I play rugby around 3 times a week and eat a 'normal' diet and that hasn't helped me to loose weight, and Atkins is the only thing that works for me. So i'm back .

Plus it's the easter holidays and my housemates who dislike me doing the Atkins diet aren't here so yay! I also have a dissertation and a uni project to focus on so I don't have cravings. I'm also banning myself from watching cooking programs...which sucks coz they are my fav types of programs.

Unfortunatly being a student I have maxed out 2 student overdrafts and am now living on my credit card...so I can't let myself throw out all the carbs I have in the cupboard, but as soon as they have gone, it's atkins all the way!!

So i'll be bothering you lot with my progres/failure.

Jo.

Welcome and good for you.
Be sure to stock up on the Induction Friendly foods so you won't resort to eating the carby stuff in your cupboards.

You could still watch them and think how to make the recipes Atkins-friendly... and then share the yummy ones with us on the Board.

Looking forward to that.

I have decided to keep somewhat of a diary of my atkins on here, co it will give me something to do when i'm craving sugar! So everyday I will post updates on this thread (if there is a rule or another suitable forum for this then lemme know!).

Thursday 9th April, day before I start the diet.
I made a food plan for the first 4ish days of induction and I went into town today and got all the food I needed. I got a friggin' load of meat from the butcher for like £14 and the veg stall at the market was dirt cheap...LOVING IT! I binged on all the naughty foods like a pasty, lindt choc bunny, bananas, grapes, milk etc...i feel so full! Excited for tomorrow and weightloss ahoy! Woop.

Prince. (I'm called Prince by the rugby girls coz my last name is Alberts, Prince Albert...pleasant huh? )

Friday 10th April - Day 1.
Breakfast - Cream cheese, cheese, bacon, and onion omelette.
Lunch - Ham, chicken, peppers, mayo, and spring onion roll ups with lettuce.
Dinner - Lamb chops marinated in lea and perrins, butter, lemon juice, and gin. with cauliflour and swede mash, and peas.
Drink - Decaf with cream and splenda.
Exersize - None, as it's good friday the gym is closed, and i prefer gym to running/at home exersise. I walked to the shop which took 10 mins uphill, that's it and I feel bad i haven't done any .

Ok...poor plannng has led me to eat waaaaay too many veg today. I'm going to have to plan alot better tomorrow! But at least I didn't do it on purpose and I didn't binge on cakes or something. O and i know peas aren't on the allowed veg list, but i didn't have anything else and I didn't wanna go out...again, at least it wasn't a cake.

Those sound like yummy menus and you are spreading your veg across your meals which is a good idea.

You already know the peas were a mistake, so I won't mention them but the swedes are also not an induction-legal veg. They are a starchy vegetable so not reintroduced till the 8th OWL rung. You can use turnips (which have a white flesh instead of the yellow fleshed swede/rutabaga in USA) next time.

The other ingredient I spotted that is not on plan was the gin, which is not reintroduced till the 5th OWL rung.

And as you said - it was not cake

I also missed my usual gym session as they closed early today but did some extra walking instead.

I thought u could use alcohol for cooking, coz all the alcohol gets burned off anyways?
I also thought swede and turnips were the same thing! Just different names...thinking about it that doesn't make any sense why would that be? Whoops.

I have lost my orignal atkins book, so I went on the website and printed off the acceptable foods list from there and peas was on it! I have the atkins cookbook and in it there is an induction meal plan type thing and it features a recipe with gin in it, and tonight i'm making something with wine in it. What shall I do?

Also, it's easter and I really want a chocolate egg and a hot bross bun! I haven't read past the induction stage tbh, do I ever get to eat chocolate again? Or something chocolate flavoured at least? Or something doughy?!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday 12th April
Same menu as yesterday, except I had swede chips instead of cauliflour and swede mash.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday 13th April - Weighed myself today and I was 10st 9 so thats a weightloss of 4lb WOOP!
Breakfast - Slightly undercooked sausages (hope I don't get sick - oops), bacon, and scrambled eggs with cheese.
(I didn't have lunch because I woke up very late and I had breakfast at around 1 in the afternoon...whoops!)
Dinner - Lamp Chops marinated in lemon juice, white wine, soy sauce, l+p, and olive oil, lettuce side salad with ham, peppers, spring onions and parsley and brocolli.
NAUGHTY/ILLEGAL THINGS (v. disappointed in self) I put hot chocolate in my non-decaf coffee and a yogurt .

Will plan non-sugary sugary type things into my menu so I don't stray again, eventhough I know that isn't the best way to do things.

As it's easter Sunday NOWHERE is open, and I am lacking legal foods...should have thought about this!

Not really. Alcohol does indeed have a lower boiling point than water, but it has to make its way out of the food which slows off things. How much of it evaporates also depends on the alcohol concentration, amount used, shape and size of the cooking dish, cooking time...

Robert Wolke, who is a Professor of Chemistry at University of Pittsburgh, wrote in his book What Einstein Told His Cook: Kitchen Science Explained that up to 50% of the alcohol can be left in a dish, even after cooking.

The last book Dr. Atkins wrote before his death, Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, 2002, says (rule 11, Chapter 18 ):

As Elizellen said, swedes are not the same thing as turnips. Swedes are also called "rutabagas" and they are only allowed on OWL Rung 8.

The peas mentioned on the Atkins website are in fact green beans. Peas like the ones in the picture on the left are not allowed during Induction. Green beans, like the ones on the right, are.

Yes, you can use unsweetened cocoa powder during Induction, if you use it in quantities small enough to be considered a spice. There was a recipe around the Board some years ago... It used 1 oz of softened cream cheese, 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder and 1 serving of sweetener. Combine the ingredients, divide the mixture into four servings (whatever shape you like) and freeze. One serving has 1.3 g net carbs and 0.4 g of fiber, so 0.9 net carbs. But use this only as an emergency! Don't make it an every day treat and my advice would be to not eat more than 2 servings per day during Induction, so that you manage to get most of you carbs from vegetables. Don't forget to count the cream cheese and sweetener towards your cheese and sweetener allotments.

For something "bready", you can make revolution rolls or mock danish. The recipes for both of them are here: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...pes-added.html (Induction Recipe Basics--More recipes added)

Again, don't forget to count the cheese and the sweeteners.

Thanks Georgina, you are possibly the most helpful person ever! I strayed off track today coz I gave into my sweet cravings, if I am going to be successful in Atkins I need some sort of sweet-like thing, or I will just give up tbh.

p.s I have tried the mock danish before, and I didn't like it.

Well, you're not alone... I find the mock danish yucky too.
