Default Induction weirdness...

I've been reading a lot of posts on this board about how people are doing a really strict induction (no fruits, nuts, etc)...and they are only losing like a couple of pounds in the two weeks. Well everday since I started induction, I have been eating 4 large strawberries (cut up) and a yogurt put on top (I eat source yogurt so it's only 5 carbs a container). But people are saying you have to be on OWL rung 4 in order to put fruit back into the diet, even berries. But I've lost 10 pounds since May 19, 2009 and my body has lost a ton of inches around my stomach.

As long as I'm still losing is it ok to eat the berries and stuff for dessert like I have. I also eat quite a few vegetables, yet all the time I am still losing. So what do you all think? Should I keep doing what I'm doing.

Congrats on the loss, isn't it great? If it's working for you, that's fab, but it's not atkins induction, it's your own version of a low-carb diet. It seems super tough at first, but you'll find (like I have reading through tons of posts) that following the induction rules and beyond works wonders.

I know that if I went on a low-fat diet, I could probably lose 10+ pounds in the first couple weeks, but it wouldn't last. That's what's so amazing about the atkins WOE.

Good luck!

i say hey, if it works for you then keep on going...although its not atkins, its a step in the right direction...your not gaining weight right
perhaps when you get sick of eatting this, or you are no longer losing weight this way, you can stick to the actual atkins induction
regardless of what choice you made.....congrats on your weight loss

What you do is up to you... as for this board, in the ADBB Terms of Service and Mission Statement, it reads: "Our underlying values are founded on the Atkins approach to weight loss from the 2002 edition of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002 DANDR), which we believe to be the safest and most nutritionally efficient method in existence."

As Skinny Girl and fofinha indicated, you are not doing Atkins. You are doing your own version of low carb. If it's working for you - great! However, it is my responsibillity to point out that it is not in keeping with the rules set forth in the 2002 DANDR.

Good luck to you.

Your excellent exercise regimen is helping your fast loss as well, and persons doing induction would be well to follow your example of incorporating exercise. Your one hour of running and walking each day is absolutely helping you!

One of the advantages of following induction to the letter is also finding out what foods are triggers for you, what you might be sensitive to, and what foods seem to help your weight loss. By not following the rungs you are missing out on this advantage. No one would ever tell you that 4 strawberries and some yogurt would keep you from losing weight, that would be silly, strawberries are so high in fiber that their net carbs are pretty low. The 'set up' of the foods list and the OWL rungs has to do with learning about your body's response to food groups as well as carb levels.

And again, your excellent exercise is also offsetting the extra carbs, and can't be compared to someone doing induction who might not be doing an hour of cardio a day. (Although if they are inspired to do an hour of cardio a day by your great results, fantastic!) And bodies are very individual, young persons such as yourself have good metabolisms that respond well to good eating and exercise regimes. Many of us more mature persons will have more of a struggle, and for us, 3 pounds on induction is still to be celebrated, if that is what our bodies can do for us.

Hope you keep succeeding! You certainly seem well motivated.

Well one thing I'd like to say is that I am still under 20 carbs a day. So I think that I'll stick with the bit of fruit because I enjoy it and it gives me the boost I need at night. Plus a little bit of extra fibre never hurts when doing a low carb regime.

This might be a stupid question, but do I have to quit the board because I am doing things slightly differently?

Not a stupid question, but NO you do not have to quit the board. Just remember the motto 'your mileage may vary'... meaning your results are individual to you. Dr. Atkins worked for decades crafting a plan to get the maximum results for the maximum range of persons. You have a huge advantage in being young! and you are doing way better than you would be eating carbs, so no one is going to rain on your low carb parade, if you promise to never advise anyone that THEY should be able to eat non induction foods on induction just because you were able to, ya' know?

But no, we'd much rather you stay.

Isn't cardio awesome? I can't walk in the mornings everyday but I can on the weekends and I sooo look forward to it now!

There is no reason why you can't say that you are on OWL rung 4... It's up to you what amount you keep your carb count - you can also add the foods from OWL rungs 1, 2 and 3...

I'm on rung 3 and thinking about hopping up to rung 4 to have some frozen fruit with my yogurt smoothie... However, I'm usually around 16 carbs per day because that's just what I eat...

At your weight, you could probably reduce your carbs with just about any foods and still lose... there will come a time when you stall and then you might have to make some changes... but up until then, enjoy the ride downhill!
