Default Chicken Broth

I am going to cook a roast in my crock pot using Chicken Broth. It is a left over can of 99% Fat Free stuff (from my Weight Watcher days). I pour a couple of cans into the crock pot and then just stick the roast in there for hours.

A serving size is 1 cup with total carbs at 1g (no fiber, so a solid 1g). There are 2 servings per can. So, if I use 2 cans just to cook the meat in my crock pot, how many carbs do I plug in? Obviously, I am not eating 4 servings as I am not drinking 2 cans of this stuff.

I am just starting today. I have tried this in the past and my cravings for carbs during my second week is like a heroin addiction. I would chase down a potato during these cravings. I am hoping I can do it this time. I have tried Weight Watchers and I simply KNOW I am eating way too many carbs, even though I am well within my points. I lose some, then gain some..., back and forth on WW's.

Thanks for any help...

I don't know what to do. It is a small number so you may just have to guess.
One of my problems with broths from the store is that quite a few of them contain illegal ingredients so make sure you check that too. The ingredient list is as (and perhaps more) important as the nutrition label when we do Atkins.

Keep on trucking. I hope those cravings don't get you. Did you check that you were not eating any hidden sugars last time. Sometimes hidden sugars (because we forget to read the label) can get us. Also eat plenty of fat and drink water so you feel satisfied. Atkins also recommended l-glutamine as a way to deal with cravings.

Well, shoot, I hope I am not eating anything hidden. I ordered the Atkins book today, so it will take a couple of days to get to me. I have it somewhere out in the garage - packed away, so it was just easier to order a used copy. Maybe then I will know how to read these labels and such. I was hoping it would be somewhat simple.

But, as an example, this chicken broth I am asking about has 1g of sugars per serving, and there are 2 servings per can. Is that bad?

I know when I tried this in the past, during my induction phase I just looked at the carb count. Perhaps that was my down fall. I am NOT a cook so I can't do all of the fancy recipes posted, I just have to keep it simple during my first couple of weeks.

If I can just make it through the initial Induction Phase I will be thrilled.

Thanks for your response...

We really do try to avoid sugar as much as we can. So on the ingredient list it says that sugar is added? Low fat products (like weight watcher) often has plenty of sugars because they take out the fat and them compensate by adding sugars.

I think if you are having issues with severe cravings you should try to do just like you say - keep it simple. Which means simple proteins (fish, meat, poultry, eggs) cooked with fats and with some veggies on the side.

Default Re: Chicken Broth

I bought chicken broth & veggie broth at the store today. They all had sugar listed in the ingredients (cane juice, fructose/dextrose). Of the three brands available, I bought the one with the least amount of added sugar...(sugar only listed once, near the end of the list of ingredients).

Technically, I should have left these on the shelf, but (there's always a but, isn't there) I don't have bad cravings and I am using these in recipes where I will only be eating a small amount per serving. Also, I am making a lot of things from scratch that I didn't used to, but broth isn't one of them

Green Beagle - if you have problems with cravings, avoid sugar completely - ie No added sugar in any food (check the ingredients). It took about 5 weeks for my cravings to go away (almost) completely. I am still careful about ANY added sugar - I check all of the labels (i.e. list of ingredients) and only buy products with added sugar if there is very little of it and I know I'll only be eating a small amount at a time (and there is no better choice).
