exactly my point. the body still produces ketones out of alcohol, but not actually burning body fat for energy. hard alcohols only stall your progress and adding empty calories to your diet. but it will not knock you out of ketosis like sugar can. |

Our bodies produce 3 ketone bodies: acetone, acetoacetic acid and B-hydroxybutric acid. When our bodies metabolize alcohol, it is first converted to acetaldehyde, which is then converted to water, carbon dioxide and acetic acid. The ketostix only measure acetoacetic acid (which is an inherent drawback to them because acetoacetic acid comprises less than 20% of the 3 ketone bodies). Because acetic acid "looks" similar to acetoacetic acid (the ketone), the ketostix may give a false positive result while you are metabolizing alcohol.

| I've always preferred the schematic drawings of chemical reactions, because I'm a more visual person.

| Are you a chemist? Do you mean line angle (bond angle) formulas? Ah, your an arrow pusher! Well I'll be the son of an nucleophilic attack (Nu

| No offense, but I found chemistry to be tedious AND I thought it was taught in a way that made it alot harder than it really is-----I chalked it up to the professors being frustrated with their career choice so they took it out on students. Their attitude was very hostile and hateful as compared with the other basic science profs or the liberal arts profs. It might be different at other universities, but it completely put me off.

| I'm not going to pretend that I followed the posts above! But does this mean you can't trust the physical signs of ketosis after drinking either? |

| It means that you can't trust the ketostix after drinking alcohol (not that they are all that trustworthy to start with). If you have the breath, the appetite suppression, etc, then you are (likely) in ketosis. However if you have been drinking alcohol, you can be in ketosis & not be burning fat because the alcohol will be used first. Once the alcohol is burned up, the body will go back to burning fat.
