Hmmm - *some* of the ones I've seen here say 'processed cheese product' on the package. I do buy the Gouda ones, because they don't say 'processed...' on the package. I can't remember off hand which colours/flavours said 'processed' on the package (I didn't buy them), but I thought it was the swiss? Perhaps they are different here in Canada?

They might be different in Canada... I really don't know. I had the red ones when I was in Edmonton and I'm sure they were fine, but the others...

I sent an email to the guys from babybel.ca with this question. Didn't get anything back yet (because it's weekend, I guess), but I'll post my question and their reply here once I hear from them.

Ok, no slim jims... pre-cooked chicken and beef in strips... maybe some dried beef too? Not sure where to get it here (haven't had my eye out for them) but there's a brand in the States my parents love, think it's called Pemmican?

Be careful with packaged beef strips...I know you can dry your own beef with approved (i.e. no sugar) rubs, and that's delicious!! In fact, I got rid of my dehydrator since the last time I did Adkins. Maybe I need to go buy another!!

Default Re: Cheesed off

cheese slices are not good, too calorie dense.

it took me about 2 months to finally kick my cheese habit

i occasionally snack on it.

i hate cooking and looking for a quick snack sometimes when there are no allowed foods in fridge is frustrating to say the least.

usually just cook a lot of chicken thighs, you can eat them cold and they last a couple days, so i usually have no problems with mid afternoon snacking

i think it's the only food on atkins that stays ore or less eatable more than 2 hours after being cooked, can't do the same with steak or fish :/

Is that the problem or the fact that you eat more than 3-4 oz daily? Because Atkins being a high fat diet, a lot of the foods we eat are calorie dense.

Oh, and talking about cheese, only some cheese slices are allowed during Induction. They should not have added stuff like whey, anhydrous milk fat, dry milk...

how about making some flax crackers which can be spread with butter and then topped with some pate or slices of cucumber or tomato?

I recently adapted a recipe by SunnySmile501 using ground pork rinds, linseed (flax), parmesan and egg whites which makes really tasty crackers that store for weeks in a tupperware container.

Since cheese is limited to 3-4 ounces daily, the fact that it is calorie dense shouldn't be a problem. It's if you exceed the 3-4 ounce amount.

As for sausages, be careful with them. In the US they add things like "corn syrup solids", dextrose, corn syrup, etc. to some of them. In Europe, they may contain breadcrumbs. So read the ingredients carefully.

That said, you can prepare your own legal snacks. But also remember.....you only snack, when you need to snack. That is, you don't automatically eat an afternoon snack because that's what you always do or because you anticipate being hungry. You only eat it if you are hungry. If you aren't, skip the snack.

Re: Babybel

This is the email I sent them:
Quote:
I am following a special diet and I am only allowed to consume "real" cheeses, so nothing like "cheese foods" or "processed cheese products". Are any of the Babybel cheeses processed cheese products?

Also, do they contain ingredients such as dry milk, whey solids or anhydrous milk fat?

Thank you,
Georgiana
And their reply:
Quote:
Good afternoon,

we thank you for your interest in Mini Babybel

Mini Babybel Original, Gouda and Cheddar are natural cheeses that are perfectly safe to eat while following your diet.
The only ingredients are milk, salt, bacterial culture, microbial enzyme (+natural colorant for the cheddar flavor). These ingredients are basic ingredients for natural cheeses.

I wish you to keep enjoying our products.

Best regards,

xxxx xxxxx
So the Swiss and goat varieties probably have some other stuff in them. Same for the Light varieties, but we don't care about those anyway...
