Default **YOUR BELIEF SYSTEM ~ AND WHY IT MAY BE WRONG**

Hi Everyone! :wave

My signature reads "Whether you believe you will succeed or fail - you're right" now the strange thing is that I thought I believed this and make no mistake, I wanted to believe it but I never did.

I always thought it made sense from a logical perspective but when it came down to me..those rules just didn't apply. Not to me they didn't. Not to a fat 287 pound, chain smoking carb and sugar addicted coronary waiting to happen sloth they didn't. Not to a guy who couldn't walk up a flight of stairs without gasping for air and sweating like a rain storm they didn't - Nope it just didn't apply, not to me.

But here's a little update about myself and following that a message to you

Since starting Atkins (my second attempt) on February 22, 2005
  • *My Gastric Reflux is gone

*I do a three mile a day tough as nails work out ~ every day

*Although my appearance hasn't changed one bit, I'm not embarrassed anymore to be seen with old friends or newer ones, those days of self imposed isolation based on body shame are over.

*For the first time in Decades I'm off all antidepressants and feeling better and more confident each day - even my Dr for the past five years can't get over it.

*A heavy smoker since I was sixteen and up to a whopping three packs a day from my early 20's until age 47 - I put out my final cigarette this past March 18th 2005, I can assure you I'll never smoke again. And the weight that I've gained since quitting is insignificant compared to the health benefits

*Suffering from chronic insomnia most of my adult life - I now sleep like a baby and my partner Sean tells me my snoring which would not only wake the dead but make them beg to die all over again has vanished.

Looking back on what has happened to my life in a mere what? six weeks is so profound and amazing that I could write about it forever. And my posts are long enough to begin with!

So does my signature quote apply now?

You bet it does.

We are what we believe, we become what we believe ~ and perhaps most powerful is that we have the power to change what we believe. I suggest the following without malice or judgment maybe it applies to you maybe it doesn't.

If if it does please remember no offense meant.

The Book!
Ok it's you first, second or third time attempting Atkins without reading the book "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution" maybe you believe you can spare yourself reading the book and succeed with the advice and guidance of the experts on this Message Board or any place else for that matter - you're dead wrong. Without reading the book and allowing Dr. Atkins to explain to you how and why this diet works you will fail - guaranteed

Frankenfoods!
Do You know how we "treat" Heroin addicts? we put them on Methadone, Methadone ironically, is synthetic heroin. The junkie remains a junkie except now he chases methadone instead of heroin. No one wins, except of course the Pharmaceutical companies who manufactur the Mehtadone and replace the street dealer of Heroin.

Stop believing low carb substitutes for your favorite foods are the answer - they're not. They exist for the primary reason to profit off of the low carb revolution - period. Some people will disagree with me and that's fine, if we all thought the same how boring the world would be.

Instead of believing you can exchange the foods you used to be addicted too and start beliving the truth - you don't need these foods and never did. You didn't "love them" you were addicted to them and that's a monumental difference. We all occassionally crave our drug of choice whether it be nicotine, alcohol, carbs or sugar - even long after we've gotten over our habitual use of them and are free of them.

Put that energy into realizing that the fundamental principle of this diet is low carb, whole unprocessed foods and high fat. It requires you to believe in a new way of eating, of seeing food and seeing yourself. Abandon your old belief system, just let it go - it's what made you fat and unhealthy in the first place.

Hunting down these "imitations of foods we used to love" makes about as much sense as a recovering alcoholic guzzling that new alcohol free Vodka - it's suicide, especially during Induction.

Give yourself a break, you don't need these foods, you need the plan, the blue print of how to succeed with Atkins and you need to believe in it and to follow it - period.

Get up, Exercise and take your vitamins!:
I used to believe I was "too big" to exercise, that my MS was reason enough for me to steer clear of raising my body temperature. I used to believe a multi vitamin was enough - I was wrong on all counts.

Start moving - as in Now! -
Stop believing you can't because your too fat or too out of shape - it's imperative to your success. As for Vitamins and supplements they can and will make an enormous difference in the quality of your life. DANDR only touches the surface - pick up a copy of 'Dr. Atkins Vita - Nutrient Solution" it will change your life.

We can look at behavior and the choices we believe to be correct and not see how they hurt us either initially or down the road. But we have the power of changing those behaviors by changing our beliefs about the role they play in our lives. In doing so we can reinvent ourselves from the inside out and replace destructive belief systems with ones that nourish our sense of self, worth, health, self esteem and dignity.

We can embrace a way of life that will continue to bring profound changes to every aspect of our being and all we have to do?

is believe.

Hi Peter,

I don't post much because I never know what to say but your post is everything I would like to say .

The few times I have posted I have said what a life changing event this WOE has been for me.
The pounds gone(82) have been a kind of side effect. The new lease on life is the best part. I can now walk anywhere , I sleep all night, no more Tums, And the list goes on and on.

Tomorrow I will 60 and DH ( as we were doing our 2 mile evening walk) asked if I wanted to do anything special and then told me that I looked better and had more "energy" than I did at 40.

Your words are very inspiring , keep up the good work.

P.S. We have a calico persian.

Default your belief system about your appearence might be wrong

Peter, you prolific pontificator, how do you know your appearence hasn't changed? :laughing

You probably wouldn't give your appearence any credit
unless you were out there looking like Bond in a speedo.
:dancingb:

Don't ask Sean - he has lived with you too darn long.
Don't ask the dog, he will just tell you what you want to hear.
Don't ask the cat, cats prefer to withold praise unless there is
something in it for them.

Ask someone who hasn't seen you for awhile.

(yeah, i'm being cheeky) :flowerki:
