| You should eat enough calories to satisfy your hunger without stuffing yourself with food. You should not eat something just because you are bored or because you still have food on your plate or because a food has zero (or very few) carbs, etc. Dr. Atkins told us it is not necessary to count calories. Yet, this does not mean calories don't count. On any diet, if you consume more calories than you burn, you will gain weight. But on Atkins you have two advantages: 1. you are in ketosis, which suppresses your appetite; 2. you have a metabolic advantage, meaning you can eat a few hundred calories more than you could on a high carb diet and still lose weight. Since our appetite is in control and we also have a metabolic advantage, counting calories does not need to be done. But this does not give you "a license to gorge" and eating a dozen chicken legs for lunch is probably too much.

I believe that the best way to overcome temptation is not with willpower, which is so often in short supply, but with our brain power, a potentially unlimited resource. Imagine that you're doing great, losing weight, feeling better than ever, thrilled with yourself, hearing compliments from friends and acquaintances---and then it happens! Despite all your good intentions, you're mightily tempted by a food you're not supposed to have. What to do? I'll tell you this: You'd better have a strategy ready!"
