YMCAs usually have pools with staircases going into them. Swimming Rocks!

Also, try getting those big rubber band thingys and work your upper body.

I need both of my knees replaced, but I am not giving up on fitness! Congratulations to you on your courage! Good luck in your endeavors.

As long as you are not advised by a medical doctor not to do any aerobic or anaerobic workouts...there is hope.

upper body training will be your biggest ally. Punching bags...throwing heavy objects, pushups and pull ups...also good ways to strengthen your back.

You might consider finding a personal trainer who does physical therapy/rehab. The trainers where I work out are trained to do this and I've watched people make amazing progress over time.

I was in a car accident back in 1992, got hit head on by a drunk driver, so I know (a little) how you feel. I herniated two disc in my back. I found water aerobics to work the best, then, after I got a little stronger, I got a recumbent exercise bike, the recumbent part is important, it worked really well. It took me about two years and three surgeries to get better. I agree with cajunthunder, you should get a physical therapist or a personal trainer to help you at first. My physical therapist taught me water aerobic moves that I still use to this day. Good Luck!

I would second or third the physical therapy thing. Where I go to therapy they set up exercise programs for people and let them work out in their gym. Even if they don't have any problems...it's just something they do. I think it's a bit more expensive than a regular gym, but once you get the program tailored to you....maybe a visit back to them once a month and go from there. Good luck. You are an inspiration.
