| Tell them to kiss your rapidly disappearing behinder I heard that too when I first started. 1.5 years later I'm still on it and my bloodwork came back very well. You hang in there and follow Atkins the way it was meant to be followed. I'm betting you'll be very happy with your own progress and bloodwork down the road.

It depends on how you choose to do Atkins. If you languish on Induction, getting bored with the food choices, then the chances are you will fall off. If you advance to On-Going Weight Loss phase, you will have a wider variety of foods and the odds of falling off due to food boredom are nearly zero. Too many people make the mistake of believing that Induction phase is the only phase of Atkins where you will ever lose weight---sorry, but we have folks in the OWL forum who disprove that myth completely. The last sentence in Chapter 13 is Quote:
Less low carb products = bad diet? This one is making me giggle..... When Dr. Atkins devised this diet in the 1960s, there were no products marketed specificially for the low carb diet. Those low carbers ate foods that were naturally low carb and they lost weight. Many of the "low carb" products were marketing ploys. I think the saddest case of "low carb" mania was a bottle of low carb salad dressing I once read. It was manufactured by a company called "Lighthouse". Anyway, the low carb product was 6.5 ounces for $3.45. The non-low carb product was 8 ounces for $2.45. Both had the same serving size, number of calories per serving, number of fat grams, number of carbs, amount of sodium, etc. This was because they had the exact same ingredients. Another deceptive case was Entennman's low carb bakery line . It was Atkins approved. If you didn't read the box thoroughly, you would have thought "Cool! I can eat this on Induction or OWL!". Nope, sorry. On one side of the boxes in small print, it stated that the product was approved only for the Atkins Maintenance Phase. So are the low carb products a good indicator for the "effectiveness" of Atkins? I don't think so. I think the majority of these products are off market because enough people began reading them and seeing how they were being ripped off by the manufacturer. Sky-high cholesterol This is interesting because Dr. Atkins said it was possible to have a higher total cholesterol when you begin this diet. Then the numbers even out. Unfortunately for Dr. Atkins, he died before the new VAP cholesterol testing began to be used. VAP is a more accurate cholesterol measurement than the usual cholesterol test. It's to the point where you can have abnormal cholesterol test with the old method, but completely normal ones using the VAP. Vice versa, there are cases where normal cholesterol tests using the old method are completely abnormal using VAP. More doctors are beginning to use VAP now. In the US, LabCorp and Quest Diagnostics do VAP cholesterols. So you might want to ask your doctor for the VAP and the regular test.

| If people say that they feel ill when they first start the diet then they are experiencing 'Induction Flu'. The body goes thru headaches, nausea, dizzyness just as its getting rid of the carbs and toxins in ur body. This should be over by the 2nd week. Obviously they didnt give it enough time!

| I heard many of the same comments, and to be honest, I said most of them myself to my brother before I found out for myself the truth. It is true that during Induction flu period you do might terrible, but the good news is it is temporary. Most people who give up falter before they get through this toughest period of time. As for numbers, I can tell you to check the book or I can offer my own anecdotal evidence. My cholesterol was over 200 when starting this WOE 2 years ago in less than year, it had dropped to 145 where it's been since then. My wife's #'s have also dropped in the last 6 months 45 points from being near statin drug material to the 160's. The only thing I would urge is waiting at least 6 months before taking your bloodwork as it can initially go up with the dietary change. In the end, it comes down to you. You can succeed with this diet if you treat it like a long term solution and not a crash diet. There are countless examples on this board and elsewhere that demonstrate that and are as healthy as they have ever been. Quote:

Rule Number Two: You don't get sick eating healthy foods you were meant to eat. (i.e. protein, fiber rich veggies and low glycemic fruits. Rule Number Three: The only "flash in the pan" were processed low-carb foods. The "real deal" has been around for AGES: lean proteins and whole foods packed with lots of vitamins and other great nutrients. Rule Number Four: The absence of starchy high sugar processed foods will improve your lipid levels. Rule Number Five: STAY THE COURSE. Betty

| About cholesterol... this is something different in everyone... for example I never got over 200, even though I ate mostly fast food and weighed 280 lbs, and I have a friend that weighs 110 pounds and has high cholesterol and developing diabetes... So this health and bloodtest issues mostly depend on you, your family health history and so on... no one should never compare this with other people, everyone is different, some have tendencies to high levels of cholesterol, others dont. If you got your blood test at the beggining, it's great, keep with the diet and after a month take them again, and be your own judge. I am not letting that any of the opinions of anyone that has not read the book and got themselves informed correctly about the Atkins way of life get to me... As I have said... the fact that bacon, butter, mayo... are ok to eat for us, makes a bunch of ignorant people think that this is unhealthy... but what about the veggies?, the meat, fish, chicken? I never tried this diet before because i was scared because of all what people say, but i decided to get my own opinion and just not hear them. I know maybe it's to early for me to give an opinion since i just finished induction, but the change I feel in me is something I have not experienced in years, and it's not just the weight loss, is the fact that there is a plan for me that i know i'll be able to follow forever... not like the 1000 diets and products i tried before, that made me give up because i knew i just couldnt spend the rest of my life in it. So... be your own judge... |

| Here is what I hear when people criticize my choice of nutrion programs ... "blah, blah, blah, blah, blah". I'm losing weight. I've been following this program for a while now. My health indicators are great and I'm off many of the meds that I originally took when I started the plan. People believe what they do based on misinformation and taking liberty to do Atkins "their way". Follow DANDR to a tee and you won't be disappointed. Eating is such an emotional issue. There are people who will talk about us for being overweight, but as soon as we begin to take control, they aren't happy either. Realize that the naysayers may have baggage of their own. Share your knowledge of Atkins with the willing, but experience the success that you will have by keeping enough of it for yourself. Best wishes.
