Default Gingivitis?

Hi!
This is my first post but I have been snooping around the board for weeks. I am on day 20 on induction and I have a weird problem. I know it is common to get bad breathe eating this way (and boy do I), but my gums have started to become swollen and bleed when I brush them. Before I started eating this way, my gums were fine. So I am thinking it's the WOE. Has anyone else had this problem? I have a dentist appointment on Monday. What do you do to get rid of the bad breathe? I have brushed my teeth with baking soda, used listerine, gargled with peroxcide...nothing is working.

Ive been on this board for a long time and haven't heard that problem, but I would see your dentist and talk to him, it might be something other than gingivitis. Also, take some Co E Q 100 and vitamin C as it is very good for your gums.
By the way, speaking of vitamins, are you taking your multi's

Thanks.
I thought it was weird but it started a few days after starting Atkins. I have been taking a multivitamin since day one but also bought vitamin C and calcium pills yesterday.

Are you sure you are doing induction the right way? I only see a couple of posts from you, and I can tell you, there were a few diet attempts in my past where I did NOT eat the right combinations of foods and supplements, and I found myself suddenly having mouth problems. It even got excrutiatingly painful to eat, especially swallow, soon after the mouth sores began and I'd continued eating the way I had been.

What are you eating during the day, and are you taking supplements and getting plenty of water?

Yes, I think I am doing it right. I read the book and started 3 weeks ago and I have lost 14 pounds. I am taking a multivitamin and I drink about 90 oz of water a day. Typically I eat

Breakfast: 3 eggs with broccoli, onions, and tomatoes

Lunch: hamburger with a slice of cheese and mayonaise with a cup of lettuce

Dinner: Roasted chicken with a cup of lettuce and some mayonaise to dip the chicken in.

Maybe the mouth problem is just unrelated.

Looks OK - I was worried for you, as my mind was whispering something like acidosis in the back of my head.

When it happened to me once on this round of dieting, I cut back on suspect foods (tuna, onion and tomato, and table salt for me) and upped my water, also added potassiom and magnesium, and it worked. I think before, it happened because I was eating nothing but meat.

You mentioned baking soda and peroxide. My father brushed with that combo for years. Eventually he had to have all his teeth pulled. The doctor told him it was because of the baking soda and peroxide. Apparently in toothpast it's ok but when you use it in its natural form it's too abrasive and causes the gums to recede leaving the tooth exposed. Maybe that has something to do with it. Just a suggestion.

Glad you are seeing your dentist

actually you should not have bad breath from Atkins We exhale one form of ketones but they are should smell something like ripe apples. Most folk have a combimation of bad dental hygein and/or off gasing of the natural volitile chemicals in the food that are like garlic breath even after you brush and rinse.

the bad metalic taste in the mouth is from another type of ketone being excreted in our saliva and we are "tasting" it reacting with our taste bud neurons.

The baking soda and peroxide are something I only started 2 days ago when I was having a problem with my gums and breathe. I will stop doing that if thats not good for the teeth. It might just be a coincidence that I started Atkins and then my gums got this way. I am just afraid that the dentist will be all gung-ho about blaming it on Atkins and not getting to the root of the problem.

Default Re: Gingivitis?

try just gently brushing your gums to remove the plaque under them they will bleed more at first but after a few days it will be noticable less.
salt water rinsing might help too but go easy on the salt more is not better.

dang AMBER I jhust noticed both your posts together it could be cause your blood sugar is up too
