actually if you check in your DANDR in the section on nuts Dr Atkins very clearly says after 14 day induction is over nuts are the first thing he tells his patients to add back to their eating. one ounce is all you get though as Dr Atkins also believed that one ounce was the limit for the carbs acceptable from them in DANDR also.

2big is of course right on. Just make sure you are practicing portion control on the nuts as they are the monkey on lots of people (ok mine) if you let them get out of control.

That confuses me. I thought the rungs were 1. veggies, 2. dairy, 3. nuts and seeds.

So we're supposed to add nuts before we do the additional veggies and dairy rungs?

If you plan to stay on Induction a long time you can add in nuts. If you move to OWL, you go by the rungs. See the additional nutrients you get from moving up the OWL rung, compensates for the nutrients the nuts will provide to long time Extenders.

Just be ware that nuts are probably the #1 trouble food for OWLers in terms of stalling/stopping weight loss and in terms of portion control: 1 ounce isn't a large amount---maybe a couple of tablespoons depending on the type of nut. So if you choose to add nuts, if you experience any problems with weight loss or your blood sugar instability symptoms return, drop them from your menu ASAP. Likewise, if you find that you have problems controlling your portion size, drop them from your menu ASAP.

Also be aware that nuts are high in fat. So you'll need to be sure your fat % stays within range.

That's just what I'm thinking, Heidi. I keep hanging onto Induction because I'm scared to move up the rungs. But I'm getting bored with it and it's causing me to slip up. This might be just what I need to get over my fear of moving on. I just sat here and counted out a pound of almonds into 16 little 1-ounce bags. It's not a bad serving - about 23 almonds. I just may try this.

actually if you look in chapter 13 being bored with your food is onr of the reasons Dr Atkins gives you to move to OWL better to move then cheat and start over.

Besides what is there to fear in 5 net carbs of those yummy induction veggies added to the 3 cups you are already eating???
you can do it move on up.

And there aren't alot of people who have portion control issues with 5 net carbs more of green beans or asparagus, but there are plenty of people who can't stop with nuts!
