I'm glad to hear you guys having this conversation. I'm five days into the induction and its driving me CRAZY not to check the scale. But i don't want to get into a situation where I'm checking it every day, all the time, because i'm the kind of person who would beat myself up if i saw weight gain. I'd rather just do it once every two weeks - if i see weight gain THEN, i can make structural/food adjustments as necessary (but that's 9 days away). my starting weight was 364.5 and i'm esimating 3-4 lbs per week. so, if i'm not down 6-8 lbs (or more, since, in reading a bunch of induction posts, the first two weeks often includes more rapid weight loss), I'm sure I'll be pissed/depressed. However, I'd rather that feeling once every two weeks than three times a day (as you can see, i'm not necessarily the most positive person - however, beneath my pessimism, I am actually optimistic about losing the necessary weight!).

ekosi maka,

Chris

Dont forget to take measurement as well, Chris

Often on Atkins we lose inches when the scales stay still, as our fat can be replaced by smaller more dense muscle - and it is the FAT we want to lose rather than just pounds!

Yikes,
I just went on the scale for the second time and found I gained 5 lbs from my starting weight! I am trying to figure it out because I have been checking the ketosis strips and I have only fallen below the medium level a couple of times. I haven't been overindulging, matter of fact, I have been reserved in the amounts I have been eating. The only thing that I may have done was eat protein all day yesterday...eggs, chicken, and more chicken, pepperoni stick and about 1.5 oz of cheese? I didn't get my veggies in because I was so busy and tired by the time I got home. As far as feeling discouraged, yeah that happened pretty fast but I thought I would come here instead and try to find some more inspiration. It is really difficult right now because I just started induction on January 6th 2008 and I thought I was doing good.

My reply is out of concern because when I started this diet I was making so many mistakes with processed meats and so I had to restart my entire induction because of it. So I am just telling you what I learned just incase you are making the same mistake...

I believe the peperoni stick has corn syrup or sugar in it, listed under the ingredients.

When I started this diet I thought all I had to do was look for sugar under the nutrition facts but that is not right! You look under the ingredients section and that will tell you what's really there! They don't count added sugar sometimes because it doesn't equal a gram so go strait to the ingredients section. Plus any kind of flour or syrups are not ok either (any kind).

I went to the store the other day and looked at every kind of sausage, brats, and things like that and the only thing I found that was ok was a comletely raw brat that came from the butcher. Every thing else has a NO NO ingredient in it! The butcher told me that every precooked meat that is processed is going to have corn syrup or something like that because they cure it that way.

If you want to make sure that you are not making any mistakes stay completely away from sausage, brats, peperoni, hot dogs, lunch meats and any processed meats like that. Stick with the stuff that isn't processed at all. This is just my opinion because I have researched this a lot lately and they are all cured in something and that something is almost always sugar in some shape or form.

It really helped me to post what I was eating everday so that I could make sure that I wasn't making any mistakes. If I hadn't done this I would have continued to waist my time.

Plus if you are working out now and weren't before you very well could be gaining weight because of the muscle. If you go to the gym have them measure you fat and that way you can watch your inches too.

I hope this helps!

OMG- I forgot about that part. I could have replaced some fat with muscle. Thus the scale isn't quite reflecting my fat loss.

Also, even after NOT losing (according to the scale) for a day or two, my pants were clearly looser around my waist. I wear a uniform to work each day, so it's always the same type/size of pants each day. One day after going to the bathroom, I pulled my belt to the smallest loop. I thought, "funny, I've never been able to wear it this small," and I just went about my business. I probably have lost more fat than I realize.

Thanks for that reminder.

BTW- your before and after pics are great! You look younger in your after pic!

So, to keep this going, I added 8 more days onto my chart..
  1. 320
  2. 318.5
  3. 315
  4. 314
  5. 313.5
  6. 312
  7. 311
  8. 312
  9. 310.5
  10. 310
  11. 309
  12. 308.5
  13. 309
  14. 308
  15. 307.5
  16. 306
  17. 304.5
  18. 304
  19. 302.5
  20. 301.4
  21. 301
  22. 300.7
  23. 300.2
  24. 299.8
  25. 299.9
  26. 301
  27. 300.3
  28. 299.9
as you can see from the 20th through the 28th some teetering around 300lBS.. Seems like my body really is fighting me to stay on that 300 line..

So, as an additional journal for all, I am going to add exercise.. 15+ Minutes daily, and see how it affects me. The results should be interesting since I had been getting MINOR exercise along this 28 day stretch, no intensive nor heavy exercise.

Wow! Thanks for the reassurance. I was starting to doubt my own sanity/accuracy of my scale. Every time I have a big loss, I am up the following day, then down further a couple of days later. I am so glad to know that this is common! Continued success!!!
