Unhappy Ketosis - how quickly does it start or stop ?

i have been doing great on my diet (extended induction- 37th day).
however today for some reason that i still cannot figure out - i went into an emotional tailspin and reverted to my old habbit of eating when upset/depressed.
anyways i had a big piece of dark chicken with the breading and one biscuit from popeyes, one medium yogurt with blueberries and granola, handfull of almonds, 2 naans and indian okra vegetable with meat sauce.
this was all i had all day on 6/5/08. and i ate most of it in one sitting around 2 pm.

i checked my keto strips as soon as i got home and it was very pale. Do you think that i was knocked off the ketosis and what i saw was some left over ketones ?
Also i am feeling great now - no hunger or cravings at all. it feels like i am still on my diet and i dont feel any physical effects from my carb binging (well, except a dull ache in my stomach, almost like it had shrunk and i force fed it and now it hurts to expand). I am back on my diet of course and have drank tons of water to flush out my sins ! LOL.

My question - how does ketosis work ? As soon as i go over the 20 carb limit does it stop immediately ? now that i am back on my diet and will follow the induction menu again , will it be back in 2 or 3 days ?

Everyones CCL is different. some people go out of ketosis at 25 carbs some at 60. It is pretty likley though that what you ate knocked you way out.

It generally takes 48 hours to use up stored glycogen per Dr. Atkins. It doesn't take me 48 hours though to get back in. I have occasionally gone out. Once for a family celelebration, several times with unintended restaraunt mess ups, (can't be sure what is in some of the stuff they serve that looks really legal) Eating totally legal, I am back in ketosis within 6-24 hours. Everyone is different.

The important thing is to just pick up the pieces (as you have) and keep on going.

It takes me a little bit longer when I cheat about 4 days to get back into a good strong ketosis ...... and for me eating just a few bites of somethign off plan can throw me right out of Ketosis as well ...... to get a really god understanding on how Ketosis works you really should read the book! No one explains it better!

Yeah for you for getting right back on track ...... be wary of feeling likes it's ok to cheat since you got bnack on track so easily ...... each trip out it gets a little tougher and getting back to ketosis takes a little bit longer ...... it's a trap for sure!

To answer Your Question i think it takes about 2-3 days to be knocked completely out of Ketosis becouse when i get depressed or sad i eat really bad and i wait a couple of hours to check my ketone stripes and i just have a small amout on it and then i check again the next day and it stays the same even if i continue to eat alot of carbs i hope this answers your ?

Hello Twinkie,
Do you have your DANDR 2002? On page 137, Dr. Atkins explains Lypolysis (ketosis) Testing Strips (LTS): Proof Positive. He explains that once you are taking in 50 grams or more of carbs a day, the LTS will no longer turn pink or purple. Showing that you're out of Ketosis.
It takes at least 2 days to get back into ketosis. At least for me.
Great to hear you're back on track and drinking plenty of water.
Sherri
