Question Coconut? or coconut JUice?

Hello everyone,

I want to know if anyone can tell me about coconut.

Can you eat that in extended induction?

I know you can eat nuts when you are on Extended Induction so Just want to make sure if we can or can't...

Unless its one of those foods that can stall weight loss because it seems I am very sensitive to Atkins bars and other foods which stall my weight loss.

I am in extended induction (11th week) and thought that you simply followed the induction rules, same as the first 2 weeks. Coconut is high in sugar so I would think it would be a major no. I dont even eat nuts in extended induction, I have been under the assumption that those are for the rungs of owl and since I am not moving to owl yet, they are off limits. Are nuts allowed and where did you hear that? I wouldnt eat nuts or coconut in induction personally but I would like to hear what some others have to say about this issue of nuts in extended induction.

Extended induction is meant to be the same as induction, just extended. If you are not doing that, you should be moving up the rungs of OWL... Coconut is a seed and can be eatten in the nuts and seeds rung

Talking Re: Coconut? or coconut JUice?

Hi,

Well as far as for the coconut ... I read on the Atkins shopping guide....after the coconut it says (phase 1-4)

That book gives you many food items and then whether it can be used and in what phase next to the food item

So that is why I decided to ask....

As far as for extended induction and the nuts...I thought I read that somewhere maybe in the book or something

IF I find it I will post the book, page and paragraph or the website where I read it. I will keep searching.

Thanks to all the advice.

if you read the part about coconut on the atkins website, it won't be in line with the 2002 DANDR... the versions after Dr A passed away are different and not as conducive to losing weight.... (IMHO)

Oh... ya, that would explain it. We do go by the 2002 version of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution on this board. I knew coconut and nuts sounded wrong... personally I would (and am) staying away from those until owl. Those shopping guides are meant to sell Atkins Nutritional products and are not created with your best interest at heart. I steer clear of any and all of he Atkins products for that reason.

Default Re: Coconut? or coconut JUice?

In my opinion from reading DANDR nuts/seeds do not get reintroduced till the relevant rung of OWL.
Most people agree that they are not to be used in induction when you start Atkins according to Rule 4 of the Rules of Induction
Quote:
Do not eat nuts or seeds in the first two weeks.
However later in DANDR in the section called
Nuts and Seeds: The Original Functional Foods
it does say
Quote:
After the first two weeks of Induction, when you can introduce nuts and seeds into your menus, you will find they make excellent snacks and often an unexpected and tasty ingredient in an entree or vegetable dish.
Some people choose to interpret this as meaning that even if you do not move to OWL after the first 14 days on induction you can add them.

I read this as Dr Atkins assuming people won't be staying on OWL after the first 14 days and so would soon be far enough along OWL to start adding foods from the third rung of the carbohydrate ladder.

But however you choose to treat nuts/seeds, do watch portion control and remember even on OWL we are supposed to add only one ounce of most nuts (1/2 ounce of cashews) rather than the whole 5 net carbs! Just in the same way as on induction we count one carb per one ounce of cheese regardless of thw actual carb count.

Wow! what about coconut milk? I use it in my coooking for flavour? Now i am really worried, my can shows 2g of carbs per 60ml or 1/4 cup. For a 398ml can it is less than 15 total carbs.

Lightbulb Re: Coconut? or coconut JUice?

Ok ....I got the book where I read about eating the nuts,

The All-new Atkins Advantage
by Stuart L. Trager M.D. with Colette Heimowitz M.Sc.
2007

Page 16 at the top

"Even if you decide to stay in Induction in Week Three, you can begin to add nuts and seeds as part of your 20 grams daily of net carbs."

Then at the beginning of the next paragraph it says:

"If you are moving to OWL, turn to page 278 for a week's worth of meal plans at 25 grams of net carbs."

Default Re: Coconut? or coconut JUice?

Coconuts aren't nuts - they are fibrous drupes - soft fleshy fruits with a hard inner surrounding a seed. They are in the same family as peaches, apricots, plums, and cherries. They are high in sugar. Technically coconut water is the liquid in the center when you crack it open. Coconut milk is made from shredding and pressing the actual coconut meat. cocount milk is HUGE in sugars as you aren't getting ANY of the fiber the fruit has to offer. I simply avoid it altogether until maintanance.
