Default Question re. Induction vs OWL

Hi,

I finished a 2 week induction last Sunday and lost 4lbs total. I have a total of 19lbs to lose so 4lb was a pretty good loss. Hoever, I knew I could have lost more than that but I messed up on a few days so I've decided to extend induction for another 2 weeks to see what happens. I started another induction on Feb 1st.

Some days I find I eat 15g carbs, other days its closer to 20g. Mostly its between 18-20g carbs/day. I know a few folk here have suggested to those who are not losing as much on Induction to move onto the first rung of OWL and add 5g carbs to their daily allotment. Its been suggested that this kick starts weight loss. May I ask what the reasoning is there? I mean why would adding carbs improve weightloss for such people? Is it about shocking your body by doing something slightly different?

I'm pretty happy following induction for another week and a half, then I will move onto OWL.

In DANDR its suggested that a person may want to stay on induction till half their weight is lost or if they have alot of weight to lose and want to lose at the highest possible rate. So...I'm a bit confused about some of the advice I've seen posted on this site encouraging people who haven't lost much on Induction to move on to OWL. Would someone explain - txs!

AND - what about the fat-fast? When would that be recommended? ie after what period of time with no loss? I've seen people advised here who have not lost on induction or lost some v. small amount to try OWL. Why not the fat-fast or even extended induction?

Btw - I realize I am not one of the aforementioned people who have trouble losing. Just curious..

E

honestly you need food to not starve! Sounds crazy but you have a better shot at losing weight by adding more food to your diet. if your body thinks its starving it will hold on to fat longer than if your eating well.

exercise, drinking lots of water and eating well will take the weight off.

Please take a multi vitamin as well if your not already.

So do you know if you are eating 65% fat each day? A fat fast is going above that percentage and is usually used by people who aren't losing anything at all, period.

Staying on induction is a great motivator, you might just be on a stall, it all depends on how quickly you want to lose the weight. Going to OWL does not make you lose the weight faster than induction. Since you don't have that much to lose, if you don't mind induction and are really wanting to see results, induction might be the way to go for a while longer...

If you aren't in a great rush, going to OWL is healthier overall, you will lose at a slower rate which is also healthier...

It's up to you

I would suggest the opposite of what msanjelpie suggested - with a relatively small amount of weight to lose (you already have lost 1/4 of what you need) there is little need to stay on induction any longer.

OWL is easier to do if you are not close to your goal weight as you can tell more easily if your 5 net carb additions of different foods are affecting your losing.

And Dr Atkins did say we should be ready to move from OWL to premaintenance by the time we have about 5-10 pounds left to lose, so really you haven't got that long a time 'spare' to stay on induction much longer.

Hello everyone,

I'm baaaaack and yes I'm on OWL now and have pretty much progressed through the rungs. I went through a nasty illness for a few weeks and was bed ridden so didn't lose anything. However in the past few weeks I've started losing again. I'm now at 127lbs and feeling great. I'm eating between 20 and 30g of carb per day. After losing a pound I tend to maintain my loss by going up to 60-70g/day for a few days and then its back to losing. A bit unorthodox, I know but it works for me and keeps me sane.

Cheers,

Elena

Congrats on moving along to OWL! That you are losing proves that the name is correct, it's called Ongoing Weight Loss for a reason!

No, nuts are not allowed during Induction. They are only introduced in OWL Rung 3.

Despite all your good intentions, you're mightily tempted by a food you're not supposed to have. What to do? I'll tell you this: You'd better have a strategy ready!"

Rungs is used to refer to steps in the carbohydrate ladder that we climb once we have finished induction. There are many stickies in the OWL forum you can look at (OWL= Ongoing Weight Loss - the second phase of the Atkins diet)
Here is one of those stickies
