Default Ketosis & Ketoacidosis

Ketosis & Ketodacidosis

The foundation of Dr Atkins whole nutritional approach is based on converting your body from burning glucose derived from carbohydrates as fuel to burning stored fat as fuel. This process is called lipolysis. A by-product of burning fat as fuel for you metabolic functions are ketones which are released in your urine & are chemical proof that your body has switched over into the fat burning mode.

Lipoysis using Ketones as a fuel is a bichemical method for weight loss-the alternative to using glucose for fuel, the very process that makes most people heavy.

In the minds of most laypeople & even some ill informed doctors ketosis is often confused with Diabetic Keotoacidosis.

Ketoacidosis is the cosequence of insulin deficient individuals (Type I diabetics) having out-of-control blood sugar levels.

Ketosis & Ketoacidosis may sound alike but the actual conditions are practically polar opposites. Ketoacidosis is distinguished by the fact that the Type 1 Diabetic in this state has been consuming excess carbohydrates & has extremely high blood sugar which is the exact opposite of Ketosis where the person has been cosuming practically no carbohydrates.

Because of this confusion as of late the Atkins Center is now calling the body's fat burning mode Lipoysis instead of it's proper description which is Lipoysis/Ketosis.
