Default fruit?

I love blueberries, and strawberries and cantaloupe. these are all currently out of season though and very expensive. I need to get some how important is eating fruit while pregnant? Are there any less expensive alternatives that wont be too carby? I thought about getting frozen but not sure how to eat them or what to use them in that way.

Default Re: fruit?

I would say it's important to eat a wide variety of produce, but I don't know how often, how much, etc.

Frozen fruit is a good option, as long as the ingredients just say fruit, with no added sugars. I add frozen berries to yogurt, cottage cheese, put them in flax cakes. Blueberries hold up really well, but strawberries always seem to get really smushed.

You could also add them to jello, top your salad with them, make sauces for other dishes.

Default Re: fruit?

IMO there are very few fruits that are really high carb. You can see the list of net carbs on the atkins carb counter http://www.atkins.com/carb-counter/?category=Fruits

I find in maintenance my favourite fruits are apples with peanut butter, frozen blueberries (in yogurt), all other berries fresh when i can afford them, grapefruit, rhubarb, kiwifruit. The one I have avoided is bananas, i was never a big fan and they're fairly high glycemic.

For frozen fruits like berries, cranberries you can cook them down and sweeten with sweetener, and use them with yogurt, or spread on whole grain toast.

Here is a link to a great db that tells you what are the worlds healthiest foods, what % of nutrients they provide, and what their benefits are:

http://www.whfoods.com/foodstoc.php

It's an excellent site.

Mindy I really wouldn't worry about your carb counts at this point, I would just make sure your diet includes a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, grains and proteins and avoid the white starches and sugars. You may want to discuss with your Dr.

Default Re: fruit?

I don't know if you have access to a Sams club, they have a great big bag of frozen berries, blue berries, blackberries and raspberries....this is my standby all the time. I get a bag about once a month, mix some frozen berries wtih plain yogurt and vanilla davincis and it is wonderful. I have that about 3-4x a week...the berries kind of freeze the yogurt a bit and it is almost like a frozen dish. They are very high quality berries and only cost about 8 dollars for a 2.5 pound bag.
