| Sugar alcohols have no calories or carbs, but they do act like sugar when ingested. If you are on indution you should stay away from sugar free candy and goodies. It could derail your induction.

| Well, depends on the type of sugar alcohols. In any case though, sugar alcohols should have minimal effect on blood sugar, that's way diabetics use it. So from what I know you should be able to subtract these from the total carb. So, technically, your friend is right. Having said that, Dr. Atkins warned from certain types of sugar alcohols and only listed Splenda and Saccharin as the only allowed sugar substitutes. What even makes it more confusing is that some people stall even from Atkins most preferred sugar substitute Splenda (haven't heard anything about saccharin yet). I could be mistaken here though, I have been wrong before..

| Some sugar alcohols *do* have a calorie content and they have been shown to affect your blood sugar. As Einy pointed out, the only two sanctioned by Dr. Aktins were splenda and sacchrine. Lots of people can eat them and not see the effects on the scale, but they're also the same people who when they eat them. If they're not back and forth to the bathroom, they're clearing rooms .People who don't get affected by sugar alcohols like that are the ones seeing it on the scale. It's a trade off. The general advice I've seen given over the years here at ADBB and other places - and the advice I follow myself- count 50% of the sugar alcohol carbs to play safe. Better yet? Avoid them whenever possible. Low carb junk food is still junk food. ~Brook

| i've been having "food" with sugar alcohols these past few days, always very small amounts that amount to no more than 5 carbs if i dont substract them. they still make my tummy grumble and tbh i kinda wish it gave me the runs as even fibre supplement, eating high fibre foods and drinking loads of water dont make me "go" often enough lol. i'd stay away if u see that they cause any problems for u, be i the runs, weight gain or whatever. im still kinda experimenting but start to think i should keep my hands off of the stuff LOL. what i was gonna say...eh...i wouldnt substract them, as i think it makes you take the issue more lightly than it should be. |
