Default Calcium concerns

How do I get the calcium I need on Atkins? I don't like eating Tums like my mom suggested but I don't want to be humped back when I'm 70.

you can pick foods from the acceptable foods lists that are high in calcium or you can just take some calcium.magnesium supplements that you get OTC at any store. Once you get to OWL with more variety you shouldn't need them unless you make poor food choices.

Kudos to you for thinking of your future health!

Cheese provides calcium, as do some leafy green vegetables. When you move to OWL, you'll be able to incorporate more calcium containing foods.

Here a linnk to calcium rich foods:

If you enter your foods into www.fitday.com it will tell you how much of the various vitamins and minerals is in them and help you decide what supplements you need to add.

You could also try a calcium supplement that you just swallow and don't have to taste instead of taking Tums.

Most people don't eat enough calcium which means use a daily calcium supplement - most of the regular multi-vitamins don't make up for the amount you miss (my boyfriend was anal enough to point this one out to me).

While you are on induction you can eat some cheese and have some cream, also bones and shells are loaded with calcium - you can often eat small boned fish whole, like sardines, eat the softer bones of well-cooked chicken, or make stock from them, eat tail shells on fried shrimp.

Sorry, couldn't resist...but it's even true that you could eat soft shell crabs whole - the calcium is there in the soft shell which is not yet hardened.
