Splenda NO-MORE!!!
Posted September 6th, 2008 at 12:32 PM by GottaBme
What I just discovered (shoulda known this before but hadn't looked it up yet) is that powdered Splenda such as in the packets or "Splenda for Baking" is a tiny bit of sucralose mixed with Dextrose and Maltodextrin for the fillers which are both sugars!!!!!
It would take a microscope to see the tiny bit of sucralose in a packet of splenda. In other words, 99.9% of the packet is Dextrose and Maltodextrin -- insulin-raising, weight-stalling, ketosis-killing sugar!!!!!
Now I think I fully understand why Dr. Atkins limits Splenda to 3 packets per day. I'm thinking it's not because of that being 3 carbs, but because the packets contain sugar!!!
Two weeks ago, I switched from Nutrasweet to powdered Splenda, and my weight loss went from great (9 pounds that week) to nearly nada (1 pound the week I switched to Splenda). And yes, I was using more than 3 packets per day because I thought it would affect me just like Nutrasweet and I know I can eat more Nutrasweet without any stall on my weight loss.
So I'm going straight back to Nutrasweet (well, I buy cheapie store-brand aspertame). I'm really really angry over the Splenda weight-loss stall!!!!!!!!!!!
I sure wish one of the long-time Atkineers had explained this somewhere in the forums instead of just parroting the book about how we MUST eat Splenda for our artificial sweetener and oh yeah, limit to 3 packets per day with no explaination of WHY.
Note: Splenda could be a good thing in it's raw sucralose form. Meaning, liquid Splenda is just sucralose and water. As I understand it, the stuff they put in diet sodas with Splenda is just the pure sucralose without the sugar-fillers.

Wow, GottaBme. I can see your frustration. I am having a hard time with the restrictions on sweetners. I used to use the store brand of Equal but switched to the store brand of splenda. I don't enjoy my coffee any longer. I did find the flavored packets however and that helped.
I wonder if it has slowed my progress down as well. I have had sf jello a couple of times without altering my weightloss and that has aspartame. I am happy with the weight I've lost (but more is always better when talking about pounds lost). I hope it helps you, switching back I mean.
Keep us posted! I'd really like to know.

Well, I looked at the ingredients of powdered nutrasweet, and it contains the same two sugar fillers to bulk up the product.
So, I went to the grocery store and bought some nutrasweet tablets which do not contain these sugar fillers. I also saw that they had Splenda in tablets that do not contain these fillers as well.
But then I spied this product called Sweetleaf. It's made with that stevia plant that some folks talk about in the forums. There were like 3 brands of products on the shelf with Stevia and no sugar fillers. So, I bought the Sweetleaf and it tastes really good. Looks like I'll stick with it for now.
That's been 3 days ago, and I can feel my weight-loss back on track. But I can't weigh-in until Saturday because I'm on the Weigh-No-Weigh challenge where we only get to weigh ourselves once a week.Posted September 9th, 2008 at 11:15 AM by GottaBme

GottaBme,
I will look for the Sweetleaf for sure. I LOVE my coffee with sweetner but I don't want to slow down my weightloss. I just bought a bag of the Splenda granulated stuff to make the little cream cheese cloud thingys with. I am gonna put some mint in the too I think. Just to liven it up a bit.
But I will certainly look for the other stuff.
