Default There is a definitive scientific test for Candida

It's called OAT -- organic acids test. It's an excellent quantitative measure of how much candida is in one's system. It's a test that analyzes organic acids in the urine. It provides a huge amount of concrete, scientific data and is useful for determining how effective any treatment against candida is.

Here's some of the things it covers:

  • Vitamin and mineral insufficiencies
  • Amino acid insufficiencies like carnitine and NAC
  • Oxidative damage and anti-oxidant sufficiency markers
  • Indicators to assess detoxification sufficiency
  • The best functional markers of B-complex deficiency
  • Neurotransmitter metabolites to assess CNS function
  • Mitochondrial energy production assessment via citric acid cycle components
  • Methylation sufficiency status
  • Lipoic acid and CoQ10 sufficiency markers
  • Specific dysbiosis markers for bacterial and yeast overgrowth

It is not cheap. It runs $320. The right doctor can order it and insurance will pay for a lot or most of it. My son had it twice when he was being screened by neurologists for metabolic disorders and Blue Cross paid for all of it.

I have had this test, and my insurance covered it, but keep in mind that it only tests for candida albicans. I have a definite yeast problem, but I did not test positive for albicans. Therefore, I have a yeast overgrowth of a different type and there are over a dozen strains of yeast in our intestines that scientists/doctors know nothing about. This test can be incredibly helpful, but it is not the final word on this problem so I would make sure my health insurance covered it before I bothered with it.
