100 Mile Diet

On the Canadian food network there is this reality show going on now where families in Mission, British Columbia are trying this diet. They pledged to do the diet for 100 days.
It is very interesting to think about how to survive and thrive on product within a 100 mile of where you live. The 6 families (down to 5 now) that the show is following are struggling a bit but are now slowly learning about foods in their neighbourhood.

So do you think you could do it?

I don't know if I could. There are those little things that may be hard to do without - such as spices. But it sounds like fun.

It's a very intriguing idea. I'd love to be able to do it.

The veggies and produce wouldn't be a problem for me. In fact, I go out of my way to grow my own or buy locally. If I had a big freezer and could buy a side of beef at a time, I could do the meat, too, because people do raise livestock of all kinds in our area.

I have a girlfriend in Arkansas who raises her own rabbits, chickens and goats (for meat and milk) and makes her own cheeses. Would love to be close enough to buy from her!

One thing I did glean from that article is the idea of growing my own winter veggies, too. I also have a hydroponic unit that I've never used, so I could grow tomatoes and peppers inside in winter if I needed to. I've hesitated to use it because the light is so bright it will bleach floors, walls and furniture. But I might try it anyway next winter for fun in the spare bedroom.

But then I'd have to order the organic fertilizers. Hmmmm.... wonder where I could get them within 100 miles.

It's a fun subject to think about!
