Well my fiance is quitting the atkins, he says its making him depressed and hes sleeping all the time now. He said today he feels "sick to his stomach" but wont eat. If he quits, its going to be 20 times harder on me

He needs to read about Induction Flu.

What he's feeling is totally normal - and honestly? It should horrify him that the junk food has done this to his body - because he's detoxing. Why would putting that stuff back in his body make him feel any better?! It won't!

It all boils down to choices, and you can't make choices for doc. He knows this works, he knows what it's going to take, and if he chooses not to follow through on it for himself, then all you can do is support him and you keep on keeping your eye on the goal - that beautiful wedding dress

Thats what I told him, that it was induction flu. He hasn't "cheated" yet today that i know of, so its still possible. But I didnt know that lots of sleep was apart of the induction flu. Ever since he started he has been sleeping more an more. I plan on staying on atkins even if he does decide not to continue. I have lost 6 lbs in 5 days. So yeah. I'm stayin!

there are othe rthings in our lives that cause symptoms we give to Atkins have him check with his doc for some simple blood tests that can poin t the finger at the cause. he could be sufferring from a simple vit deficiency or something more major like hypothyroid.

Yep, being incredibly sleepy is part of the detox. So is not sleeping WELL! His body is just struggling to flush out those carbs and sugars.

See if you can convince him to wait three more days. By then, he should experience a rush of energy and a really great sense of good will towards the world. That might make him want to continue beyond the three days.

Well, I'm not quitting. It was just horrible though. I THOUGHT i'd gotten through the flu portion, cause I woke up monday feeling absolutely great, full of energy. Than on Tues I just absolutely crashed, at work I was just dying. When I got home, the thought of ANY of the stuff I should eat just made me want to throw up, all I could think of was getting a nice pizza. I was all ready to do that too, but I just couldn't do that to Daes, I knew she wouldn't be able to resist if that was in the house taunting her.

I did cheat again, just a little bag of candy at work. It did make me feel better at the time, as I was feeling really faint, and I still had work to get through. My ketosis strip had been up in the large area until than, wehn I tried later it was a bit lighter. But this morning it was back in the large, so I think I'll be ok. We're gonna be staying on induction over the 2 weeks anyway, so I'll just count my 2 weeks starting over on Tues.

Despite the cheat this time, and last friday, I still weighed in 7 lbs under this morning.

Doc,

Be sure to take high fat low carb foods to work with you. Pack a small cooler if you need to. That fat is sustained energy. If you're having a tough time not having enough energy, eat often and keep eating well. Are you getting plenty of veggies and fat in?

Good wishes to both of you! It's great to see you doing this together.

You've probably heard of marathoners and other elite athletes inhaling gargantuan amounts of pasta before big endurance events, often referred to as carb-loading. It turns out that fat-loading may be more effective. More scientific research is required, however, studies on both animals and humans have suggested that a fat-rich diet may increase endurance. A 1994 study compared the effects of a high-carb/low-fat diet and a high-fat/low-carb diet on two groups of trained cyclists. During high-intensity exercise, the groups performed equally well; during prolonged, moderate-intensity exercise, endurance was significantly enhanced among the cyclists on the high-fat/low-carb regimen1. Two other studies on humans suggest that increasing dietary fat from 15 percent to 42 percent of total intake increases maximum oxygen consumption and endurance capacity2-3. The published research suggests that increases in dietary fat may be beneficial—not only for general health, but also for physical endurance.
For some people it takes longer for their bodies to detox and adapt, but keep chugging your water (helps greatly with detox!) and post your menu if you have any questions about it. Calories count, but this is not a low-calorie diet. There is definately a caloric burning advantage with eating low carb.
