Default Induction and Depression?

I don't know whether anyone keeps track of this forum, but I'm going to give this a shot:

I'm on my third day of induction. I suffered from major depression and an eating disorder for many years, but I got treatment about two years ago and had very few symptoms since. Honestly, I had no symptoms, other than still abusing sugar and carbs, but that was more of a physical problem, not mental, for me.

I had sugar cravings for the first two days, but today I am ok cravings-wise. But I feel really, really depressed, in a way I haven't felt in years. I was wondering whether my blood sugar most likely being low because of induction might affect my mood? If so, how can I change/help this? Is there something I can do to stabalize my blood sugar?

Thanks

maryam

Default Re: Induction and Depression?

you are going through induction flu and should feel better in a few days if not or your depression turns to thoughts of harming yourself callyour Doc ASAP.

What meds are you on? Some meds use thew same liver pathways as Atkins does and so you need your dose altered to be more effect but your tratment team should be monitoring that and decide if based on your blood tests and symptoms you need a change.

Many many new ro low carb folk feel what you are feeling and quit. Think of yourself as a carb addict detoxing and just like a junkie you will crave a fix and your Dr4 Brain will do anything to get it.

Many folk think Serotonin is made from carbs but it ia actually produced from the amino acid tryptophan found in poultry and dairywhich are allowed on Atkins. Also light is important and many folk start showing signs of SAD about this time of year so again discuss it with your doc. bright light as in 10,000 LUMs bright for 20 min in the AM works wonders at helping our bodies incr4ease the seatonin production by turning down the darkness increased melatonin production.

happy low carbing you aren't alone as we have many folk on antidepressants and eating Atkins who are successes maybe not breakneck speed losers but losers still the same.

2big is absolutely right.
I just want to say that we do monitor this forum as there are so many of us that have 'depression' and other problems. Your not alone in this at all, and sometimes just talking about it helps. Right now I am in a major funk and its been difficult and when I feel like this, I come to ADBB and just hang out and that really helps.
The best thing to do is to follow the good Doctors plan to the letter as your body is just rebelling and wants its carb fix. Keep busy, plan delcious meals and take a walk with a friend.

Thank you two so much! I'm feeling a lot better right now. I'm only on birth control (Yasmin) and it's never caused depressive side effects in me, but I know it has a tendency to. I was on Prozac for a year, and if this keeps up I might consider getting back on it, with a doctor's help.

Yeah, I've been really under the weather the past couple days, and I'm sure it will pass. I just hope the depression passes with the physical symptoms too And I will definitely contact my doctor if it gets any worse.

Thanks!

Smile Re: Induction and Depression?

Maryam,

I have been on various mood altering drugs throughout the years and with Atkins I had some depression in the first couple of weeks. But, now, with my doctor's approval I am off all those meds and I feel better than I have in years. I think it is the mixture of support from the board, the positive feelings of controlling the amount and type of food I inhale and the affirmations I get from people who see me and notice a difference. I hope your symptoms lessen as time passes, but remember to keep your doctor in the loop on any decisions you make about altering your meds. Good luck.

Deb

Can I tell you that I also was on Prozac a few years ago, yet had been off of it but still depressed for years. Well on Atkins I have been on for about 5 weeks and I feel wonderful. It has really helped me wiht my depression, I am stunned. So hang in there and perhaps it will help you this way too!

Good luck!

I just started Atkins four days ago and have been in mood swing ****, myself. I'm not tempted to cheat, although I am tending to overeat on legal foods when I get stressed. My body is really addicted to that fullfull feeling, and it is linked to my depression for sure. I have Bipolar, but have been offmeds for 2years, as I have learned to manage with making sure I excercise, sleep, and eat regularly. I am by no means cured - but I watch myself for signs of going too far either up or down - both can end SO disasterously.

Birth control pills DEFINATELY have a huge effect for me weightwise and moodwise. I have been battling lows since I started a progesterine-only pill in March, and was hoping the Yasmin I'll be switching to might be better... but maybe not. At any rate, pregnancy ALWAYS makes me miserable and fat, so I'll have to deal with the risk.

Hope you are taking good care of yourself and sticking to your guns!!

Feeling how you are felling is normal for all inductees. try to slightly increase your fats to deepen your ketosis and you should get craving control.

that is okay. we all laughed when I was posting about P I S S the acromyn for post induction stall syndron and poof the censor went **** eventually the admins when you tell them a word is dispearing will look into it and decide if it should or shouldn't be censored on ADBB the board came with built in censorship properties.
