Default Lipitor??

When I went for my last diabetes check-up my doctor was very pleased with my A1C, my lipid panel, weight, etc. We talked about taking me off of the Lipitor, just so I could see what my cholesterol would be without it. It was very high before Atkins. However, I have a very strong history of heart disease on both sides of my family. My Dad had his first heart attack at age 51. And eventually died from heart disease. So with that risk coupled with increased risk because of diabetes, I don't know if I should go off of it or not. There is some indication that Lipitor reduces the risk of heart attack even when cholesterol is not high. Does anyone have an opinion on this? I know we are not doctors but I would like to know what some of you think on this matter? :help

Yes I have read those same studies and so far have said no to it, latest diabetic news research says blueberries decreases chol as much as drugs do, now can’t find it as deleted it but coop gets the same newsletter, maybe she saved it???

Lipitor doesn’t stop heart attacks, it lowers chol.

Only50% of heart attack patients have high chol, did you read Atkins chapter in Diabetic revolution about heart disease, there are better tests to see if you are at risk, if don’t have the book I will look them up but because they didn’t indicate I was a risk and my chol is ok, ldl hi norm I have chosen not to use it but its a personal decision for sure. I get tests repeated next week after three months on nothing so will see what occurs, have been off Lipitor for a yr but used supplements and think the fish oils escalated my ldl somewhat so tried three months no supplements and will see what has happened.???nite nite.

Just got this off Real Age newsletter I get:

A Nutty Proposal
Eating a handful of walnuts each day might help control your cholesterol.
Walnuts can improve lipid profiles and vascular health in people with high cholesterol, research has revealed. Walnuts are high in antioxidants and alpha-linoleic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid with cardioprotective properties. Participants in the study derived the health benefits from eating as few as 8 to 10 walnuts per day.

many of us produce too much LDL because of our genes and all the diet changes in the world will not fix us. If yor Atkins is correcting your LDL then your LDL should have should a big drop even with the lipitor. You can ask your doc if you can wean off the drug slowly over a yrs time and see what changes you get. The big news with the statin drugs like lipator is they will help with inflamation too and that is what the docs now think is the trigger for heartattacks from blood clots blocking arteries. (may also help arthritis)

I think the test Canuck is reffering to is the C reactive protein test

My latest test results were - Total: 143 - HDL:26 - LDL:96 Trig: 102 The doctor said my HDL is pretty low, but sometimes the Lipitor tends to lower that as well as the LDL. Canuck, let me know how your tests come out without Lipitor. I don't have the Diabetes book yet, but am going to pick one up this week when I go to Sam's Club. The doctor is sort of leaving it up to me if I want to go off of it or not. I think I have some weakness in my legs- I don't know for sure, but I think that is from the Lipitor. I saw the report that you referred to about 50%of heart attack victims do not have high cholesterol. So it seems it is not all about lowering your cholesterol.

ya 2big that is only one of the test to have done, others are
homoysctiene, fibrogen, and another strange name, spelling is off but book is in my bedroom and bob sleeping on nights. Can get it done at
liposcience.com and is something like NMR.
I will read my emails form Duke and Atkins diabetic book and post it all tonight ok
My c reactvie protien was 1. something and others are gonna get done so I am going to decdie on that basis but all latest reprots show statins good for diabetics as far as inflammation goes but I had weak legs etc and so dont want that again and am trying my damdess to be drug free.
Once these blood tests are done though I will restart my supplement program but wanted a break and to see how my body copes on its own.
