Heart Disease Author Al Sears, M.D. Warns of Life-Threatening Dangers

Publish Date : 12/5/2004 6:43:00 PM Source : Health News Onlypunjab.com

The National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) sounds like a good thing. They want your LDL cholesterol at 100 or lower – or they want you on drugs. But wait until you find out who’s setting these cholesterol guidelines. Al Sears, M.D., author of the new book, The Doctor’s Heart Cure, Beyond the Modern Myths of Diet and Exercise: The Clinically-Proven Plan of Breakthrough Health Secrets That Helps You Build a Powerful, Disease-Free Heart http://www.dragondoor.com/b30.html warns that vested interests may be manipulating the recommendations. And potentially risking, rather than saving, our heart health.

Imagine you’ve struggled for years to lower your cholesterol and you’ve succeeded. Your LDL is down to 115 using food choices and exercise. Even if you still have several risk factors – hypertension, diabetes, cigarette smoking, high triglycerides, obesity, or low HDL (high density lipoprotein), you’re well on your way to better heart health.

But if your doctor is getting his guidelines from the NCEP, don’t expect a pat on the back. They’ll advise cutting LDL another 30 or 40 percent no matter what your levels are now.

“If you have someone start at an LDL level of 115, don’t just give a small dose of statin to get it to 99. Give a dose for a 30 or 40 percent reduction,” says one of the docs on the NCEP in their report.

But Who is the NCEP?

Our government supports the NCEP and receives its cholesterol guidelines from this group of medical doctors. This appears appropriate until you discover that:
1. Companies selling cholesterol lowering drugs paid eight of the nine influential doctors in this group.
2. One doctor moonlights for ten drug manufacturers while holding a senior government position.
3. Two of the doctors hold sizable stocks in drug companies.
4. One serves on a drug company board.
5. Two went to work for drug companies shortly after setting the guidelines.

The recommendations make no mention of government failures to warn us of drug company errors in the past. Take for example Bayer’s Baycol. Baycol was approved by the FDA, only to be removed from the market in a hail of lawsuits, after 31 people died from muscle breakdown, which overwhelmed the kidneys and ended in kidney failure. And the problem is not behind us. The newly approved cholesterol drug Crestor also has killed in this way.

According to Dr. Al Sears, there is a far safer and more effective way to guard our heart health:

“Fighting heart disease isn’t glamorous. It requires a commitment to your health – not a $20 copay at the prescription counter.

But you can do it with high protein, low carb natural foods and effective exercise. Whether you have high cholesterol or not, you’ll be taking care of ALL of your risk factors – not just the one that pads the drug companies’ bottom line.”

“We need to turn the traditional Food Pyramid on its head,” continues Dr. Al Sears, who recommends a diet rich in high-quality fats and organic proteins and low in starches. Dr. Al Sears’ new book The Doctor’s Heart Cure goes beyond the Atkins Diet and popular high-protein diets, in its emphasis on the need for organic meats and fats and in its breakthrough advice on the importance of correct exercise for heart health.

"Dr. Al Sears really gets it. What a refreshing breath of fresh air, an MD who really understands nutrition and isn't afraid to speak out and bust the myths! The Doctor's Heart Cure is my new favorite book!" — Jonny Bowden, author, Living the Low Carb Life: From Atkins to the Zone Choosing the Diet That's Right for You

Wow- I guess you could definately call that food for thought! It makes me wonder just how much the large drug companies disregard our overall health for the almighty dollar! I worked for many years as an assistant for an executive for a large drug company and saw many disturbing things that they would do to get doctors to prescribe their drugs. Most of them had nothing to do with health! Anyway, thanks, Canuck for keeping us on top of these issues! My step Dad is on Crestor- which I would get off if I were him! I myself, am still on Lipitor which I am really questioning. I want to get this book and check out what Dr Sears has to say.

Canuck, at my last appt my Doctor toyed with the idea of taking me off the lipitor- said she wasn't sure if I needed it. But then she said because of my family history of lots of heart disease- she decided I should stay on it- but was open to me going off to see what happened to my numbers. Now that I have read so much about some of statins, including Lipitor, I am considering going off of it- It is so hard to know what to do.

Well with family hx etc it’s another story so you have to make sure you have no inflammation nor build up of plaque as diabetes isn’t only just about BG. Most die from heart disease not hi bg….I assumed with your low weight now chol might be down to norm but it was only a wonder.

I think if you get your reg blood tests checking for liver functioning etc and no problems its fine. It’s just so many have problems with it. It’s such a debate that we have to all decide individually. I have restarted my statins but have 40 lbs more to go and have family hx too. My chol went down initially but now popped up and they assume it is genetic…….. l.

Anytime you deal with meds and either staying on them or getting off, it's an individual thing.

When I went for the initial blood work in August, 2003, that led to my being diagnosed as a diabetic, my overall cholesterol was 266. My doctor placed me on Zetia and Zocor. A year later, in August, 2004, my overall cholesterol was down to 125. However, my doctor still has me taking the meds, because of family history of heart problems.

Plus coop diabetes is always going on even if blood sugars good so we each have to do what is right for us.
Controlling bg is only one aspect of the ugly ole thing.
