Default advice needed

I got called back to my doctors as my blood glucose level came back at 6.7 (overnight fasting) and have to give another test tomorrow (fasting again) what I am confused about though is that it seems that a low fat , low carb diet is reccommended for diabetics and yet there are loads of people here saying that their levels are better eating higher fat.

I really on't know much about this which is why I need to learn more.

Thanks
anj

I don't think the higher fat has much to do about it. If you are on low carb it is pretty tough to also be on low fat. Not much left to eat. I've been in ketosis for 6 weeks and have stopped taking my daily injection of Lantus insulin. I'm no expert on Adkins BUT it pretty obvious that low carb helps diabetics tremendously. Seems most people at least maintain there present Bad cholesteral levels and raises the Good cholesteral. I would get a copy of Adkins Low Carb Living. It explains it all. Good luck and heres hoping you can get your sugar levels in control. AdManPro

Anj,

I would also suggest you read the book by Atkins for Diabetics. Atkins Diabetes Revolution. With Atkins your "high fat" does not last forever. The natural progression is to add back in carbs (HEALTHY CARBS) and as you do that your fat drops down.
Are you on any meds? Are you testing daily?

thanks for your replies.
I willget my new results next tuesday - so they will decide from there what the next step is - whet diet or med controlled - hopefully diet!

I understand about the fat being lowered as we get furter down the line. When I got back to work today they had all decided to gang up on me and said that I should be eating more carbs, starch and sugar - it was all quite hurtful as even my best friend started to gang up on me - I just couldn't get them to grasp that you don't need refined sugar in your diet and that the more you do use the more insulin your body needs - so it was not a bad thing thing that I am not eating them! I explained to the nurse and my doctor what I was eating without using the Atkins word and they both thought it was very healthy!!

ah well - will wait and see what the test shows - either way I know I am soooo tired and P ing for England and have dizzy spells so if it is not the glucose levels then they will have to find another cause as I am sick of feeling like this.

UK Girl,

I am confused (don't worry, it is not you, it is me.......age, blonde etc....lol lol)

ok, answer some questions for me so "maybe" I can help you.

Have you been diagnosed as a diabetic? Pre-diabetic?
Are you on any meds?
Are you testing morning and evening?
The test you had done, was it an A1C?
When did you start Atkins?

Levels will be lower when eating fat (to start). When you eat a fat it slows down your bodies absorption of a carb. Does not stop it completely and sometimes it will just do a slower rise in you BS, sometimes it will show up the next morning or not at all. Everyone is different.

I ask about the test as an A1C is a three month snap shot of your blood. So, that may play into the results?

Hi Bren,
Here goes - I don't know what and A1C is!
All that happened was that I went to see my GP, and he decided that he wanted full bloods done (fasting)- when the result came back for my glucose it was 6.7 which he said he was not happy with and thought I might be diabetic - which would go with some other symptoms I have ( personally I don't think I am at all) Any how I had to do another fasting test - I get the results tuesday. I have been doing atkins for about 7 weeks I think.

thanks for trying to help - not long until tuesday!

an AC1 is where they look at your hemaglobin and see how "sticky" it is with sugar... they can determine if you have been experiencing high glucose over the previous 6 weeks or so by this process.... if it is high that means for the past 6 weeks or so you have experienced periods of elevated blood sugar.
hope this helps.

The 6.7 Number seems to be your A1C.

It is my understanding that the test is done about every 3 months (at least that's what my doctor has me doing) and it's basically an average for that time frame.
