Default My Mom...

My mother came over on Friday to visit and we went out to eat. Well after we ate she asked me if i had my bg tester with me so she could check her bg (she is a non diabetic), anyway she started telling me that she was drinking water all the time, and she always had dry mouth. So when she checked her bg it was 267. I told her that she needs to go to the doctor, but i don't think she understands how important it is to go to the doctor. I told her that it would not be as bad as mine ( i am type 1), that she would just have to take a pill most likely, and i even told her that if she didn't even want to do that then she could just lose some weight and that helps also. I have already talked to her several times about going on Atkins but she always has some kind of excuse. Anyway the reason i am telling you guys this is because i don't know what to do. It makes me so upset that she is was acting like she didn't hear me when i kept telling her to go to the doctor. I think it just upsets me because if all i had to do was lose some weight to get off of shots then i would be there in a heart beat. The doctors have told her for almost 14 years now that if she didn't watch it then she was going to be a diabetic. (she had diabetes when she was preg. with my brother) I guess my question is what am i suppose to do? i don't her about all of the complcations with diabetes if she doesn't do something, but i just think she is scared because she knows they are just going to tell her things that she doesn't want to hear. I know this topic really doesn't have much to do with this board but i know you guys will have good advice and i just can't stand to think that my mother has to go through the same thing i have to. I know whats it is like, and i don't want others to feel the same way. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for all the help!!! And thanks for letting me vent!

I understand your pain, Randi! Been there, done that, and I'm sure you are feeling as helpless as a kitten right now, but all you can do is gently remind her what is best for her and WHY you are worried about her. Tell her you want her around as long as possible and not one day less, that you want her to live to a ripe old age and see her grandchildren grow up (if she has or will have any), tell her how important it is for you that she take care of herself and see if you offer to go with her to the doctor if she will go then and/or offer to call and make the appt. Call her a couple days after you have this conversation with her and ask when "we" are going to the doctor. You can't MAKE her do anything and unfortunately you really are helpless in this case, if she won't listen to your loving comments and gentle reminders. :hug

Wow, that is an upsetting situation for sure.

How long after she ate did she take her BG??

I think what you have done is all there is too do, you can get pushy and make her mad but would she go with you if you made the appt or would she go against you...

I would just keep remarking on it and use your emotions (ask her how she would feel if you refused to take care of you and allowed yourself to die young, you know, kind of reverse it) (mean I know but I would do what it takes) to get her to hear and get thru that barrier telling her how you need her, telling her what has helped us, print out some stories here.

Let us know how it goes, we think it is related to here as when you are upset your Bg go up too, so we are here but seems like you are doing all you can.

Sorry to hear that and yes I too wouldn’t want my loved ones having to go thru this. :hug

I can totally relate to what you are saying. I knew for quite a while that I had some symtoms of diabetes- but stayed in total denial about it until one day I realized that my eyes wouldn't focus. I couldn't read anything! WOW! that got my attention! I went to the doctor the next day. I hope your mother doesn't wait too long- because while you are playing that denial game- diabetes is wrecking havoc on your body, as you well know. Do what you can to get her to go, but beyond that she has to be the one to finally give in and go. Good luck, let us know what she does.

Hi Randi,

I feel so bad for you. I wish there was something that I could say to help you out. Obviously, your mother is in denial. You've done all that you can do, hopefully she will come around soon and see the doctor.

Best wishes to both you and your Mom.

Please keep us informed!!

Hi guys! Thanks for all of the input and kind remarks. Sorry i haven't gotten back with you sooner, but i started a new job this week, and my new puppy has been running ridged. Anyway, i have been trying to call her today because i know she works on mondays, but i will let everybody know what happens when i find out. Also she lives in a different state then i do so it will be hard for me to go with her to the doctor. Also she checked her bg about an hour to hour & 1/2 after we ate. Thanks again for alll of the support and i will let you know.

Randi :hug :hug

obviously she is concerned about it or she wouldn't have ask you for the monitor so that is a good sign. No parent wants to have the roles reversed and the child in the parent role so please just nudge her along and you will see better results. Like hey mom you should see how well the folks with type 2 are controlling their blood sugars eating the Atkins plan many are off meds too and give her the link to this site of course if you do you better ask Coop or Canuck to delete this topic first.

Then follow it up by sending her a copy of DANDR 2002 or the new diabetic Atkins book and tell her Canuck is in there as an Atkins success story. offer her a copy of the great acceptable foods lists on the induction board stickies for her to have handy and then all you can do is pray she does come to realize she needs to take steps to become healthier for her sake.

Hey guys i just wanted to let you all know that my mom went to the doctor today. She has to go back tomorrow for all of the tests to find out if she has diabetes. they did say she has high blood pressure (she is at a risk of stroke level) I think i have her really thinking about starting atkins. I once my father finds out he is going to be on her to do something. I have given her this boards information so hopefully she joins us. She said she is waiting until next week (she has to go back to the Dr. again next week) she doesn't want to start a diet then have her doctor tell her not to do that certain diet. I would hope that her doctor would suggest Atkins because then she would hopefully start it with us. Okay well i just wanted to update everybody.
